Dr. Dog's new single "That Old Black Hole" opens up like a psych jam grooving through their token jangly guitars with the new additions of insistent tribal drums, a fuzzy bottomless bass, and crescendoing keys. The chorus jumps into action when Toby Leaman's signature mewls "There's an elephant in my head / and I tiptoe around it". "That Old Black Hole" is the first single from the Philly band's upcoming LP Be The Void, set for release February 7th from Anti- Records. Dr. Dog breached the studio for this latest with the help of new members Eric Slick on drums and electronics-percussionist-guitarist Dmitri Manos. Decisively cacophonous and leaning towards a more primal rock n' roll direction than their folkier preceding albums, I reckon that the next batch of songs from Dr. Dog will capture the scrappy tumbling of their live performances. Gut feelings first—everything louder and rawer seems to be their next move.
