I'm gonna hold back on this one, folks: it'd take an age for me to describe exactly what I despise about award shows (especially music award shows!), the way they reinforce musical hegemony and the strange "class divisions" they create in culture. However, the 41st American Music Awards played out last night, and we've already gotten a piece about the winners up over here,
but in case you missed any performances from the 41st annual AMAs, you can check out pretty much all of them below:
Lorde was there to show-off "Yellow Flicker Beat"
Charli XCX reminded us that she's probably not going away any time soon with back-to-back performances of "Boom Clap" and "Break The Rules"
Ariana Grande demonstrated her continued inability to enunciate in "Problem"
Mary J. Blige reminded us that she was still around with "Therapy"
Sam Smith and A$AP Rocky turned up to inject some level of soul into the proceedings with "I'm Not the Only One"
One Direction was there with "Night Changes..."
Selena Gomez sang "The Heart Wants What it Wants"
Imagine Dragons showed up to promote their new single, "I Bet My Life"
Pitbull stepped away from the podium long enough to spit out a hat-trick, including "Fireball"
Wyclef Jean and Magic! Teamed up to give us a showing of "Rude"
And the evening closed out on Jennifer Lopez and Iggy Azalea's duet "Booty" but the rotten light design made it seem like a wasted opportunity: why flaunt your assets if the lighting's just going to make them look flat (also, is anyone else tired of being reminded on an almost daily basis that Iggy Azalea and J-Lo have shapely butts? I'm starting to believe that their asses have, in fact, taken on lives of their own and co-opted the rest of their bodies for some nefarious purpose)?
