He just can't stop. Hot off the release of his Enough Thunder EP, James Blake has spit out another EP set for a December 11 release. Entitled Love What Happened Here, the EP will be an R&S Records feat. Taste the latest daring output, a track called "Curbside."
"Curbside" opens with off-kilter percussion. The song is next split almost into two—one half moving into a bass drum kick mashed with rhythmic and unfathomable low-octave vocals, the other half privileging falsetto scales and a wacky conglomeration of horns. The combination ought to be strange yet Blake doesn't stay in one place long enough for the listener to feel completely alienated. Mutating the dub-heavy beat into strange permutations, the sound is far from linear and evokes a modern-day musique concréte, toying with, delaying, and repeating the same sounds until they breathe on their own.
