is not afraid to embrace their geek side. The new music video for "Lavender" from July's release IV
came out today, and it's got everything you want from BBNG. That is, it's got Dungeons & Dragons, a gun, poison, and a Kaytranada hologram. No, this isn't one of the clubs SNL
character Stefon goes to, it's a garage filled with a bunch of passionate nerds and a legendary role-playing game.
The BBNG guys are held hostage by an evil dungeon master, with not many options open for escape. One of their first attempts is summoning Kaytranada, whose tiny holographic presence fails to free them and ends up just watching the craziness unfold. The smooth and ambient bass-heavy sounds of "Lavender" take on an ominous feeling as we watch the guys get seriously worked up about their situation. In the end, BBNG poisons the dungeon master, leading to an excessively bloody death. The video is a powerhouse expression of geekiness and satirical seriousness. The ending even includes an infomercial for John Dempsey, a Toronto-area 'Dungeon Master 4 Hire' who promises a less bloody, totally immersive game that "will leave you asking, 'when can we play again?'" BBNG makes the geek in all of us laugh at them, and does it to a groovy beat.
BadBadNotGood and Kaytranada are some of the best artists out right now taking really different approaches to hip-hop production. BBNG's work with names like Ghostface Killah, Earl Sweatshirt, and GoldLink, among others, has resulted in some of the most interesting jazz-based hip-hop sounds out there. The same goes for Kaytranada, whose work has gained recent attention for its soulful energy. With entertaining visuals to accompany, BBNG is packing a full repertoire.
