I'm a sucker for artists who not only write and perform, but also produce everything themselves. When I listen to a song that was done by a DIY artist, I imagine them sitting in their bedroom studio, turning every knob and tweaking every little note, putting their very own sweat and tears into it. They decide exactly what they want to be. There's a special authenticity that you just don't get when listening to a song put together by a team of people...This is the artist you are listening to and that's it. There are tons of great artists going down the DIY route right now. Here are eight that are currently killin' it.
Southampton-raised 22 year old Laurel delivers total Lana Del Rey vibes with slurred vocals and atmospheric, west coast-influenced guitars. "Hurricane" is off of her forthcoming EP, Park,
to be dropped on November 18th via Counter Records.
LA-based singer/songwriter/producer HANA is a force to be reckoned with -- both on her own and with collaborator Grimes. She released a lot of different style, acoustic music years back, but it seems like the release of her self-titled EP earlier this year marked a rebirth, as the old music was taken off the internet. Now she makes sultry electro-pop.
3. Maggie Rogers
We're all familiar with Maggie Rogers by now, right? She presented this song (self-produced) to Pharrell during his visit to NYU and he lost his shit. Although she's signed to a major label now, it looks like she plans on keeping the music pretty DIY, writing and recording-wise.
Lapsley - aka Holly Lapsley Fletcher - is a singer and producer who hails from the UK. She recently did a documentary with The FADER
where she talked all about the production process. She started on Garageband...And now look at how far she's come!
LA-based TOKiMONSTA, real name Jennifer Lee, is one bad ass producer and DJ. She's also the first female to join Flying Lotus' crew/label BRAINFEEDER.
6. Weyes Blood
What if you took Father John Misty and Lana Del Rey and mixed them together? Well, you'd get Weyes Blood. Natalie Merling, who is the writer behind the project, just released her album, Front Row Seat to Earth
via Mexican Summer
and BandCamp states that everything is written and produced by Berling, mixed by Kenneth Gilmore, and mastered by David Ives.
MADEIRA is a little dream-pop gem hailing all the way from New Zealand. We recently discovered her producing skills and snatched her up for Gear Talk Tuesday
, where she talked all about her favorite synths. She's as authentic as it gets.
8. Computer Magic
Computer Magic is another artist we recently featured on Gear Talk Tuesday
and for good reason. She's an awesome DIY producer...Plus, she's huge in Japan!
