Last night on "The Colbert Report," Brian Eno
and Michael Stipe
joined Stephen Colbert to sing an a cappella, harmonized version of "Lean On Me." Colbert enshrined Michael Stipe on his "Rock and Roll Wall of Fame" and interviewed Brian Eno about his various artistic ventures.
Colbert flashed an advanced copy of the new R.E.M. best of album, Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage 1982-2011
, saying it includes "all the songs you know, love, and illegally downloaded."
The audience clapped along indulgently to "Lean On Me," but I wonder if their smiles waned as mine did after about a minute of the song. Wait, was this supposed to be funny or not? They all looked so earnest! Was this a fundraiser for Burma after all?
