After a rough couple days filled with the surrealism of our election sinking in, Childish Gambino
came through today to comfort us with a brand new track. "Me and Your Mama," the first track on Gambino's upcoming Awaken, My Love!
, premiered on Zane Lowe's Beats 1 show today. Gambino (aka Donald Glover) teased the album with cover art on Twitter yesterday, and Lowe was able to confirm today that the release date will be December 2nd.
The track's ambient beginning plays like a lullaby, soft and easy on the ears, with a repeated high-pitched refrain of "I'm in love when we are smoking that la-la-la-la-la." Elements continue to build until, a minute a half in, the drums go double time and the bass hits. HARD. I swear I was walking home and I almost had to take a seat on the sidewalk when "Me and Your Mama" picked up. Goosebumps all over. Glover comes in shortly after, with an almost unrecognizable croon somewhere in between Mick Jagger and James Brown. Channeling old rock and soul, the song's gospel-style background vocals set the stage for Glover to flex his new style with raw power. He cries and pleads, "They wanna see us fallin' apart, you know that I love you, so let me into your heart." It's a message that seems obviously directed at a lover, but with the unrest in many places right now, it seems we could all benefit from it. He's telling us to stick together and let love in, no matter where it comes from.
Judging by this first track, Awaken, My Love!
might be an entirely new musical direction for the Childish Gambino name. Though Glover's music was never so firmly entrenched in hip-hop, he was always considered a rapper by most. But who knows, with a recent past including songs like "Sober" and now the release of "Me and Your Mama," we might be more justified in calling him a singer at this point. Glover's incredible capacity for creative vision has been recently illustrated in 2014's Kauai EP
and this year's FX series Atlanta
. With Atlanta
's beautiful exploration of race in America receiving universal acclaim, and upcoming roles in Spiderman
and Star Wars
films, Glover has much more than his music to look forward to. Still, Awaken, My Love!
looks to be one of the most exciting releases in the coming weeks. We'll see what else Childish Gambino has in store for us soon enough.
