In our ongoing quest for global domination, Baeble decided that Philadelphia needed invading. So we made up a good excuse, and that excuse was not cheese steaks (although they were had), it was a Thao And The Get Down Stay Down
show at the First Unitarian Church
with Portland Cello Project
(what a great excuse).
And while the cheese steak was OK, and the shepard's pie was disappointing, Thao
totally did not disappoint at all. The crowd was very relaxed as they filed in, brown bags in hand, ready for some of the quaint pop of David Schultz and the Skyline
. Although the kids thought they could sit all night, PCP
and their variety of translated-to-cello tunes got the crowd back up on its feet. Their participatory cover of "Hey Ya" was particularly well received. The fivesome of Cellos also did everything from original material to classical pieces to Pantera.
Next up, Thao came out to play old favorites, as well as new songs from her new album Know Better Learn Faster
. Cup of wine in hand, Thao charmed the crowd playing a bigger-than-her-body guitar and singing the heck out of her tunes. She even took a toothbrush from an avid fan to "play" her guitar with during the encore; she is apparently well known for the skill. You can tell she has had some practice.
And in case you weren't part of the intimate crowd at The First Unitarian Church in Philly (which included local indie notables Pattern Is Movement, although no one seemed to notice them in the back save for the enthusiastic Baeble editors present who once had an awkward video interview with them), you can catch the entire show right here on Baeble.
