We're all aware that Columbus Day will occur this weekend on October 12th, but did you know that today, October 9th is Leif Erikson Day? Conveniently placed three days prior to the celebration of Christopher Columbus' "discovery" of the New World, Leif Erikson Day recognizes the Norse explorer who found his way to North America 500 years earlier than that Genoan jerk.
Ever since we became too old to benefit from a free day off from school, we've jumped ship - from the Santa Maria to the dragon-faced Viking schooner - to annually celebrate the achievements of Erikson's bad self. How does one celebrate L-D-Day, you ask? Since pillaging the homes of our neighbors is no longer acceptable, and pickled shark is the only Scandinavian delicacy Bizarre Foods has shown us, we instead choose to spend the entire day air-guitaring and head-banging to the most absurd Viking metal music the Internet has to offer. Viking Metal is basically a genre of music led by Renaissance fair nerds who could totally kick your ass, and would probably eat your soul if given the opportunity. We have absolutely no idea what they're singing about as our Swedish intern/translator is off today celebrating with his family, obviously. But if we had to give it a guess, it's all about swingin' swords, bangin' blonde broads, and sluggin' mead. Here's a taste of the tunes we'll be hearing today:
Bathory - "One Rode To Asa Bay"
Bathory actually sings in English about the Christian infiltration of the Viking world, but more importantly, they wear chainmail and fight with swords on horses. Rock. And. Roll.
Amon Amarth - "The Pursuit of Vikings"
Amon Amarth, a Stockholm-based group signed to Metal Blade Records (hard points!), reminds us that tough guy business is best carried out in an abandoned cabin.
Ensiferum - "In My Sword"
Peasant uprising, 300-esque slow-mo, and kilts. Notice the female head-banging on the keyboard - footage of such has never been captured in the wild.
Borknagar - "The Earthling"
Manegarm - "Vetrarmegin"
Manegarm bring us to their club house, another abandoned cabin to perform "Vetrarmegin", and although there are like 15 guitarists, this song is kinda kicks ass, you guys.
We hope you all have safe and joyous Leif Day!
