I'm having a hard time getting my head around the BBC-sponsored, Ethan-John's-produced cover of the Beach Boy's "God Only Knows." However, the music video's a nice bit of ostentatious lunacy. Kicking off BBC Music, a new project by BBC Music meant to make their various programs more accessible and interconnected (so it's got a good point), it's impressive.
Over the course of the last year Mr. Johns somehow rounded up many of the major names in contemporary pop -- Lorde, Pharell, Sam Smith, the members of One Direction, and more, as well as some of the more venerable members of the institution -- Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Brian May and even Brian Wilson himself in order to get this thing made.
It's all for an honorable cause, with proceeds from the single going to benefit the Children in Need Charity. Hell, it even sounds good! As much as I disdain a lot of these artists on their own, they can sing and this arrangement makes perfect use of each of their unique vocal talents (plus, that Brian May guitar solo is pure Queen).
It is also, in some ways, unnerving. Maybe it's the orchestra and all the pretentions that brings with it. Maybe getting that many celebrities together in one place just can't help but trigger my alarms, like maybe BBC is trying to extend some kind of musical hegemony.
