I could give you a long list of bad covers. I could also give you a list of good ones: Deftones cover of "Ordinary Love," At the Drive-In's rendition of "This Night Has Opened My Eyes." Now, add this one: Courtney Barnett's glossy version of Birthday Party's (formerly Boys Next Door) "Shivers." Although she's not the first to do it, Barnett puts some life into this 1979 Aussie goth-blues single. Oh, did I mention Jack White produced it? Fits like a glove.
Barnett says Nick Cave and guitarist Rowland S. Howard (of Birthday Party) are both huge influences on her. This chilling cover of "Shivers" will appear on her B-side's record to "Boxing Day Blues Revisted," which will be released Oct. 16th. Just in time for Halloween, you can listen to Barnett's cover and walk around looking like a zombie (Listen to the song and think about it; it works).
