THROWBACK THURSDAY: A Backyard Session with Deer Tick

Before this month, it had been 4 years since Deer Tick released an album. In 2013, they gave us Negativity, a moody Americana/indie rock production that, among other things, told the very personal story of frontman John McCauley's family and relationships. Deer Tick members McCauley and Ian O'Neil visited Baeble's backyard shortly before Negativity came out in 2013. They played a few songs, drank some beer, and spoke to us about their experiences at the Newport Folk Festival, life on the road, and their worries about their sustainability as a band.

Looks like Deer Tick managed to stick around in a big way. They released new albums Deer Tick Vol. 1 and Deer Tick Vol. 2 on September 15, and everyone knows two albums are better than one. Deer Tick Vol. 1 is all their latest acoustic songs, which, like the acoustic work on Negativity, is personal, narrative Americana with a more polished production than their first four albums. Deer Tick Vol. 2 is their recent tracks that involve electric guitar, more upbeat and lively than Vol. 1, but also a bit of a departure from what they've put on any one album before.

With Deer Tick Vol. 1 & 2 available for public consumption, the band is headed out on tour for the next four months. They start their tour in Louisville, Kentucky, on October 17 and will travel the States, Canada, and the UK before their final show in Glasgow on January 20, 2018. While you wait for them to come to your town, revisit our awesome session above.
