have shared their new track "Garage Palace" today, which features a fire appearance by British rapper Little Simz
. Though the track has been performed live on several occasions while Gorillaz were touring their most recent album Humanz
, it is now available online, and as a bonus track on the Humanz
vinyl box set, along with 13 other exclusive songs.
An eclectic mix of euro-dance inspirations can be heard almost immediately on "Garage Palace". Producer and the brains behind Gorillaz, Damon Albarn, pulls from classic house, baile funk, and of course UK garage influences to create a track that is incessantly frenzied and evocative of the convulsive energy of Carnival. Grime rapper Little Simz holds the mic for the entire track, and is indefatigable in her verses, seemingly rapping without the need for breath, and following the rhythm step for step, no matter how many BPMs it eclipses. In his interview with Zane Lowe on Beats 1 Radio, Albarn said of Simz, "I just was really struck by her kind of individualism. She's just not part of a scene, which is great for her."
Simz's performance certainly defies description, and with Albarn's genre-eschewing production style, the two make "Garage Palace" a distinctly unique albeit easily accessible track that just might warrant going after the deluxe vinyl release for.
