have some things in common, Their music is insanely infectious, their fan base is loyal, and their stage show is a solid dance-a-thon. Going into Thursday night's show at Irving Plaza, I was met with a crackling vibe of electricity.
Magic Man was already onstage (dammit I had times mixed up and missed the opening few songs!) giving their all to the audience as they seamlessly moved through their electropop-fresh catalog in support of their recently released full length album, Before The Waves
. The crowd was going fucking nuts dancing, singing along, and when the band announced their last song "Paris," the room basically went ape shit. Even from the balcony you could feel the heat of the crowd and the pulsing energy. After thanking the crowd and their roaring cheers, Magic Man slipped off stage so it could be prepped for headliners, Smallpools.
You couldn't ask for a better bill. Smallpools music is nothing but feel good. Even if you aren't super familiar with their music, the guys put on such a great show you can't help but immerse yourself in the moment, dance your ass off and smile...a lot. From their signature monster face on the drum kit to Mike Kamerman's TLC muscle tee, and the blow up killer whale thrown into the crowd, the guys are on point when it comes to pleasing their fans and making sure the energy doesn't waver for even one note. They moved through their set effortlessly and when they played 'Dreaming," the crowd again went full on ape shit, where a few fans looked close to hysteria they were so fucking pumped.
Aside from the bands executing pretty much perfect performances, the best part of the night was the brave soul who got in the Halloween spirit a day early, and showed up to the show dressed as a banana. It was amazing. The lone banana in a crowd of un-costumed show goers...of course I had to snap a pic!
