it doesn't have to be beautiful (but it helps)

This past week I caught a case of the post CMJ depression; can't seem to get enough sleep, work piling up, and to add insult to injury, gone are the days of five concerts a night bleeding into the all day parties and more concerts. Besides going back to yoga and eating my vegetables, I've been listening to a lot of the quirky folk-rockabilly duo from Sheffield, Slow Club, and I'm feeling better already. Charles Watson and Rebecca Taylor have been performing under their current moniker since 2006, and at first listen the band could be passed off as severely twee folk fluff. But Slow Club juxtaposes their saturnine sound with bizarre metaphors, dark humor, and weird percussion instrumentation like wooden spoons, water glasses, and chairs that makes you realize there's more going on here; "Because We're Dead" ends with a poppy celebration and both vocals singing "you set fire to me!" in their happiest harmony.

Clever ironies aside, the duo are also frank, catchy, and genuinely tender. Their brand of indie pop is witty without being snarky, even when they're playing tongue in cheek, the incredibly catchy tunes will keep you smiling.

Slow Club signed with Moshi Moshi Records back in 2007 and since have released a few singles, an EP, and this past July, their first full length entitled Yeah So. Also be sure to check out the band's MySpace as their music videos are pretty damn delightful. So just remember the next time you're feeling down and need a little dose of sunshine, Slow Club have got you covered.-amelia trask
