For most musicians, the pilgrimage to a city is par for the course. Nashville, NYC, LA, Austin, but somewhere with a scene to get found in. Americana singer/songwriter Israel Nash
found himself passing the traffic from the other side of the road. His record Rain Plans
, released stateside back in August, is anthemic of life beyond the skyline.
It's hard not to hear Neil Young in Israel Nash. Their guitars speak similar languages, and Nash's lyrics traverse the same Americana landscape over which Young captained his search for a heart of gold. Once you've drawn comparison to Neil Young, there isn't much more one can say about a musician. Nash's sound is simple, organic, sincere, guitar driven rock shaped by country.
When discussing Nash, and particularly Rain Plans
, the conversation consistently returns to imagery. "I wanted to make an album that sounded like the way the hills looked to me," the hills in Dripping Springs, Texas, where his pilgrimage out of New York City ultimately lead him. "Moving from New York City to the Hill Country of Texas was an incredible change for me. When life changes, art changes as well.
Nash isn't struggling to reinvent the wheel with Rain Plans
. The album is a collection of Nash's experiences without being emblematic of any particular moment. "There isn't really one higher theme to me, but just a reflection of real life, real lyrics, real friends recording together." Like a painted landscape, Rain Plans
isn't striving to be a new form of art,"the truer you can be to the form, then better. I want truth."
is, quite simply, Nash's truth.
