Record labels spend millions of dollars trying to find that "X" factor in musicians/bands. And if we knew precisely what that "X" factor is, well, we'd be Max Martin (love or hate his songs, that man knows his way around a pop smash better than anyone else working today). But the truth, perhaps, isn't that there's a single "X" factor. Instead, there are a host of factors that play into whether somebody can cross that threshold from "talented" to "star." And there are few performers working today that check as many as those boxes as James Bay
Powerful, stirring voice? Check. Crossover smash song? Check. Good looks? Just ask his legion of female fans. Double check. James Bay has been one of the defining breakthrough acts of the last couple years, and with his new video, "If You Ever Want To Be In Love," it's not difficult to understand why. James Bay has that gift to just play his songs and forge a connection and any other gimmicks be damned. The video for the track is minimalist, bathing Bay and his band in orange light as he plays a tune that is equal parts James Taylor and Bob Seger, and for a dude that is just keeping things simple, he sure looks and sounds damn good doing it.
