recently released a killer album called Strange Mercy
, full of spooky pop (perfect for your haunted house this weekend). She performed four of the songs for her label 4AD and their live session series, recording them live for the first time since the LP dropped.
Directors Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard (who direct all the 4AD sessions) had a pretty clear idea of how to present Annie Clark and her music. The inspiration is a 1968 Shirley Bassey performance on Italian TV—thus eye-makeup, live-feed backgrounds and glamorous outfits abound. It gives Clark's dark and swirly melodies a quixotic visual companion, certainly fit for this weekend's promise of goblins and ghouls, as well as the album's aesthetic.
Clark plays "Chloe In The Afternoon," "Surgeon," "Strange Mercy," and "Year of the Tiger."
4AD has a few more details to offer:
Shot at Shangri-La Studios in the heart of the Brooklyn film and photography district in Greenpoint, the session was recorded with Annie's new band, Daniel Mintseris (keys), Toko Yasuda (moog) and Matthew Johnson (drums).
