Musical archivists with a particular fetish for DC Hardcore (OK, so all Dischord Records fans) should be thrilled to hear that Dischord's pushing out a recording of Fugazi's
never-before-released first demos (appropriately titled First Demo
) on November 18th. They should also be thrilled to know that Dischord's gone ahead and posted one of those demos on Soundcloud today and that, best of all, it's worth the listen.
This early version of "Merchandise" is different enough from the final version that was immortalized on Repeater to bear a listen by even the most ardent Fugazi fan-- the intro's a tad longer, with pianos this time and there's less of Guy Picciotto's vocals than some might prefer -- and strong enough that anyone who's unfamiliar will find a perfect point of entry for what will (if they know what's good for them) turn into a life-long love of Fugazi and all things related to DC's legendary hardcore scene.
What's more, this might signal a continuing trend in Dischord's release policies. They pulled Lungfish's
from the vaults back in 2012 to give it a wide release and now this: maybe there are other forgotten Dischord goodies waiting for us in the near future? My fingers are crossed so tight they're cutting down to the bone.
