In November, the honey-voiced guitarist Sufjan Stevens will release an album of his less-varnished tracks from the production of his 2015 album, Carrie & Lowell. Among them will be a version of the song "John My Beloved" that was apparently recorded on his iPhone. No, Sufjan did not go ahead and write a song about John, his beloved iPhone. I'm gonna get some more coffee.

The track, which is actually an early take of the song that would eventually appear on the critically-acclaimed album, will also appear on The Greatest Gift Mixtape—Outtakes, Remixes, & Demos from Carrie & Lowell, along with a number of other tracks that were recorded up to Carrie & Lowell's release.

I haven't listened to a lot of Sufjan Stevens, but listening to the two versions of the song one after the other, even an outsider like me can appreciate the clear quality Sufjan Steven's voice and the simple, powerful tune he strummed up on his guitar. That melody went on to become the beautiful track featured on Carrie & Lowell:

The Greatest Gift Mixtape—Outtakes, Remixes, & Demos from Carrie & Lowell will be out on November 24.
