Mitski seems to like keeping a relatively low profile. So I guess it was only natural for her to show up on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert last night without an introduction. That is, she was already playing with Jon Batiste and the house band Stay Human when Colbert announced her and plugged her album Puberty 2. The band stormed through some of Mitski's songs, including "Townie" from 2014's Bury Me at Makeout Creek.
The focal point, however, of the singer/songwriter's casual appearance was a rendition of "Your Best American Girl" with Stay Human. Mitski's voice was nothing short of perfect live; besides slight lyrical timing changes, the performance was virtually indistinguishable from the studio recording. An understated appearance and approach seemed to make Mitski an even larger and stronger presence on the small late-night stage. Batiste added a nice touch to "Your Best American Girl" with smooth piano accents while Stay Human jammed out around their guest artist. Mitski even seemed to stare straight into the camera as she sang the last lines of her hit song.
Mitski was full of genuine smiles into the crowd, humble bows to the band, and such an overall unassuming manner that you'd think she wasn't quite sure she was on the right stage. Such a refreshing demeanor paired with unchecked energy and emotion in her music is finally getting Mitski the attention she deserves as an artist.
