I've been a fan of Kimbra
ever since I heard her voice in Gotye
's "Somebody That I Used To Know," and I've been missing her ever since the release of her 2014 album The Golden Echo.
Seriously, it's been three years, where'd she go? Well, the New Zealand singer recently answered that question with the release of her brand new single "Everybody Knows," and it is hands down her best work to date.
What makes Kimbra is her voice - it's filled with soul and has the ability to bend like a rubber band - and it maintains the lead role even when the rest of the music has evolved. It starts out with revolving breathy samples and a soft beat that slowly grows into a sharper snare hit as the song progresses.
Sonically, the track grows stronger and stronger, which is also symbolic of Kimbra's emotional growth. In the chorus she sings, "I was young and gullible, but baby I grew," and we have no choice to believe her - this song is living proof.
The song is off of the singer's new album Primal Heart,
out in 2018.
