Being a pop star is hard. You're expected to always sing well, constantly look good, have a lovable yet natural personality, be mature when needed, and sometimes, the position even calls for some choreographed dance moves. What might be the biggest challenge though, is making all of the above look easy. Billie Eilish
While currently on her sold out tour, Eilish made a stop at Public Arts in lower Manhattan last night. The indie pop singer is only fifteen years old and performs and co-writes with her older brother, Finneas. The two took the stage together, Finneas taking care of the music while Billie sang - however she was required to whip out a ukulele for her fun cover of Drake
's "Hotline Bling." She also played the piano for a gorgeous, intimate song alone, which she warned was something she had just written. Even though it was a small set up, the two siblings still made their best efforts to put on a good show, even whipping out fully choreographed moves for a minute.
Billie's lyrical genius was on display for the full duration of the set. She hit us with clever, snappy one-liners, but it was lines like "I hate to do this to you on your birthday, happy birthday by the way"
in "party favor" and "When you walk out the door and leave me torn, you're teaching me to live without it"
in "Bored" that exemplified her mature outlook on relationships and life. It also showed that she's just a damn good songwriter. Sure, she co-writes with Finneas, but don't think she doesn't deserve credit. Her personality is so engraved in her music, you could hear it when she spoke in between songs. She came off more confident than most people I know in their mid-twenties. It made the crowd want to dive even deeper into Billie's world and find out just when and how she turned into a fully flourished artist with wisdom that stretches far beyond her years.
Between her style, her already-notorious one-liners, and the original ideas that she conceptualizes on her own
, this is an artist with a vision, and we're ready to watch.
With only one official EP under her name, Billie Eilish is on tour right now, find dates here
. It's a show you don't want to miss.
