CMJ Band of the Day: Royal Teeth

We're pleased to announce Royal Teeth as another performer at our upcoming CMJ showcase. Described as a "happy accident", this New Orleans band whimsically furnish their cutesy blend of indie-pop with samples and keyboards for a dynamically sleek sound. On their debut EP Act Naturally, the young six member group playfully juxtapose crunchy bass lines, stick clicks, calypso inspired backbeats, and often ethereal guitars/keys that allow you to get lost in the rhythm. Descending from an aesthetic that instantly recalls the Dirty Projectors, instead of textured instrumentation and nimble time signature changes, Royal Teeth wrap their creations in bright walls and the dense coupling of fat bass and percussive elements.

Tracks like the mischievous "Wild" with its actively lilting chorus keep playing in your head long after the song is over. Equally as memorable is their cognizant cover of "Heartbeats" by The Knife... Nora Patterson's earnest voice always complements Gary Larson's emotionally reaching lead vocals. This is what popular music should sound like—a wholesome dose of personality and southern charm, sure to be catapulted into mainstream success.
