It's been awhile since we've heard some new Morrissey
material, hasn't it? Though it's not outside the norm for most artists to go two or three years in between releases, with someone as prodigious as Morrissey you notice more when you haven't been hearing from him in such a span. Well he's back now and looking maybe not quite better than ever in the video release for his new track "Spent the Day in Bed".
There's a lot going on with this song and video, the most noticeable being Morrissey being pushed around in a wheelchair by, oddly enough, U.K. footballer Joey Barton. On the surface, the song is typical for what you'd expect from Morrissey, mopey and morose, though with a touch of theatrical flair that makes it all feel a bit tongue-in-cheek. Morrissey doesn't seem too perturbed at his having spent all day in bed, though most doctors would probably call it a red flag for depression. "Spent the Day in Bed" seems more like a celebration of "treat-yo'self" culture, with the Moz dishing out self-care tips including turning off the television and enjoying not having to deal with an emasculating boss.
Indeed, "Spent the Day in Bed" is a pretty spirited track. An upbeat bass and keys rhythm holds down the song, accompanied by an uplifting string section and a funky electric piano line oddly reminiscent of Queen's "You're My Best Friend".
It's a bit of an odd turn for the man who's music and persona spawned a wave of pseudo-depressive memes based on his lyrics known as "Smithposting". So, if this is Morrissey turning a new page—which is not likely, but hey, I'm having fun, I'd like to bid adieu with one of my favorite Smithposts.
