Sunflower Bean - "Rock and Roll Heathen"
I caught them at the Music Hall at Williamsburg last week and they've become my latest favorite band. Human Ceremony
is their most recent album and it's incredible. They really embody the perfect balance of rock 'n' roll and psychedelic, dream-like elements.
Washed Out - "You and I"
Speaking of psychedelic, dream-like elements, Washed Out is another band that's been a personal favorite of mine for the past few weeks. They're songs are so sensual and absolutely chilling.
Jamie XX - "I Know There's Gonna Be (Good Times)"
This is such a fun song and I can't even begin to explain how I want to get up and dance to this song every time I hear it. "Good Times" by The Persuasion is really taken to a whole new level and when listening you'll definitely know that there are gonna be some good times!
Rhye - "Last Dance"
Rhye came back on my radar when I found out they were playing here in New York tonight. Their downtempo electronic R&B, originally shrouded in mystery and anonymity, created an incredibly unique album with Woman
in 2013. "Last Dance" is great, but really, you should just listen to the whole album.
Kevin Devine - "No History"
Kevin Devine cut right to the core with this one. An eerie similarity to early 2000s alternative frames a stark retrospective on the events of 9/11 and how that day has affected the years since. A tough topic to navigate, no doubt, but Devine did it justice with "No History."
Kiyo Cato - "Cocaine"
This song has been haunting me since I saw White Girl
last weekend. The film is an absolutely explosive, crazy portrait of a girl getting involved in a pretty deep drug scene in Brooklyn. This old ballad by the late John Martyn became even more creepy with this version. Note: I can't find any
info on this artist, Kiyo Cato, but I want more.
STRFKR - "Satellite"
STRFKR on a Friday afternoon just feels right. "Satellite" is off of STRFKR's highly anticipated album, Being No One, Going Nowhere
(out November 4th!). It's danceable and fun without being as synth-heavy as were used to from STRFKR and I love it. I can't wait for the new album.
David Bowie - "Right"
Because today is the perfect day for a Bowie throwback. This track has everything that a perfect funky jazz song should have - heavy bass lines, sharp guitar chords and tons of soul. The ending even gives off a little Soul Train
vibe. David Bowie forever.
Nothing But Thieves - "Itch"
featured this as our Song of the Day
today. Wanna know why? Because it's great. Everything about it is great. The vocals, the melody, the music, everything... I will undoubtedly be playing this on repeat all weekend.
Jagwar Ma - "Loose Ends"
Jagwar Ma just released their new album Every Now & Then
today and this was by far a standout track after a few listens. This Australian band is interesting -- they're alternative but they also break into straight up club beats. This one in particular has a great groove, incorporating little LCD Soundsystem and Hot Chip moments, while still sounding like an original, effortlessly cool Jagwar Ma track.
Shura - "Nothing's Real"
The title track off of Shura's debut LP Nothing's Real
is so cool. It makes me feel like I'm half at a Madonna concert and half in a quirky 80s high school movie.
