CMJ Band of the Day: Casiokids

Prepare for a dose of groovy quirk when Casiokids take the stage at our CMJ showcase. Hailing from Bergen, Norway, the cheery group inject a relentlessly catchy electro-dance foundation with tribal percussive, surf nostalgia, folk elements, tropicalia, indie rock and even flashy disco rhythms. You can't deny that sounds like a whole lot of good, clean fun! Their latest LP Aabenbaringen Over Aaskammen is imaginative, clean, and winsomely playful due to its inspiration and narration of made-believe adventurer Dr. Tarzan Monsoon and his discovery of a hidden rainforest. ('Aabenbaringen' translates to 'the revelation,' and 'over aaskammen' as 'over the mountain.')The mirrored or scrunchy synth lines bounce off instruments ranging from flutes, horns, accordians, African drums, woodblocks, and a good ol' guitar and handclap here and there. A sprightly breeze governs their sound, largely in part to the falsetto vocals sung entirely in their native dialect by Ketil and Fredrik. Reminiscent of rockers of Montreal (who supported Casiokids on several tracks from the album), Hot Chip, Animal Collective, and even reaching all the way back to another legendary Norwegian pop band A-Ha, Casiokids are a boundless fount of pure exuberance and talent. Rumor has it, they sometimes have puppets on stage with them! It's gonna be a rad time.
