The dynamic duo of Patrick Carney and Dan Aeurbach (better known to most as The Black Keys) played a T-Mobile launch party at Espace last night, and we were invited to check it out. T-Mobile is celebrating the release of the Samsung Galaxy S II and the HTC Amaze 4G, so they rounded up some copious amounts of branding, booze, and celebrities to mark the occasion. This event had everything; hors d' oeuvres, an open bar, giant light-up robots spraying fog, at least two people from the cast of Gossip Girl, etc. At times it was like an SNL sketch about New York nightlife, especially the part where some of the cast of SNL showed up. Although we were at minor risk of winding up as a caption-this-weirdo on Guest Of A Guest, some Jameson and new friends helped keep the evening enjoyable 'till the Keys took the stage, and well after.
Needless to say, the allure of free booze and the Black Keys packed the place. Patrick and Dan performed their usual shtick, first as a duo blowing up their hits of the past, and then a four-piece tackling songs from Brothers. The guys looked as stoked as they were at Lollapalooza in 2010, further proof they just love to kick it, whether for a room full of lackadaisical celebrities and fauxparazzi, or for ten thousand festival goers. After the band, New York's premiere DJ Questlove took to the mixer (and to his twitter for feedback).
The band has a new LP on the way, called El Camino, due out 12/6. Check out some photos from last night, especially the money shot of one dude in the crowd clearly using his iPhone (in lieu of the Androids phones on display everywhere) to record the performance.
