After a stellar debut with last year's The Big Black and Blue, First Aid Kit are back with the title track off of their upcoming second album, The Lion's Roar. This song finds the band playing with a full band instead of the soft, acoustic ballads that garnered the band's success.
The track, produced by Bright Eyes' Mike Mogis, begins with just light strumming of an acoustic guitar and singer Klara Soderberg's warm voice. "The Lion's Roar" slowly builds, adding drums, mandolins, woodwinds, and piano before hitting its stride. The song is folky with a bit of a country twang bringing to mind images of bonfires at night. The timbre of Soderberg's voice gives the song a warmth and depth despite the sad lyrics like "I'm a goddamn fool, but then again, so are you." After listening to the song, it's hard to believe that the sister duo of First Aid Kit are only in their early twenties and late teens, writing with such depth and emotion, but they've always been this way.
