First Aid Kit Apply A Little Patchwork

The always enchanting, Swedish sister duo First Aid Kit set up shop for a headlining gig at Irving Plaza this past Saturday evening, bringing "The Dr. Dre of Indie Rock", Mike Mogis, along to round out the edges of their pastoral pleasantries with folky flourishes of mandolin, pedal steel and other tid bits along the way. As it turns out, Johanna and Klara Soderberg, along with drummer Mattias Bergqvist, would need him. Half way through what was a flawless set, the keyboards ducked out; a technical problem even a band with their namesake couldn't remedy. Still, the band made the most of the unique situation, going off the grid for the remainder of the hour plus long set. "Ghost Town" received a pure, acoustic treatment (no amps, no mics). "Emmylou", a highlight from the band's latest album The Lion's Roar, worked in its sparse, country-coated ways. But the real treats of the evening were the band's special odes to Simon and Garfunkel's "America" and Fleet Foxes' "Tiger Mountain Peasant Song"; the song that put the sisters on the map a few years back when they posted it to YouTube. Sure, it wasn't a perfect evening, but First Aid Kit patched things up as they went along...a handy, dandy set of songs if ever there was one. Check out some photos below.

Check out a time when things went a little more according to plans. We filmed the band a couple years back.
