With Donald Glover
winning both Golden Globe awards for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series and Best New Comedy Series last night for his work in Atlanta,
it's fair to say that he's pretty good at what he does. But along with his most recent album "Awaken, My Love!"
making it towards the top of so many music outlets year end lists (we gave it the 4th spot on ours
), it seems more accurate to say that Donald Glover is killing it right now.
Glover's Golden Globes Acceptance Speech:
Migos - Bad And Boujee
And it's no surprise. Donald Glover, throughout his whole career as an actor and musician, has always prioritized being honest with himself over everything else, and never sacrificed that accessibility that made him so attractive. Even if this did result in some slightly cringe-worthy childish rants on Camp,
and a few confusingly left-field works on Because The Internet,
he's always been true to himself. And it's paying off hugely for him.
"Awaken, My Love!"
is a prime example of this. Up until that point, Childish Gambino was known almost exclusively as a rap project; with both Camp
and Because The Internet
rooting themselves in hip-hop type beats (although experimental) along with him spending the majority of these albums, you know, rapping. Awaken
challenged all this by throwing rapping or any type of recognizable hip-hop rhythm out the window. Him saying 'fuck it, I'm going to sing for a whole album'
was a huge risk. But this beautifully produced and soulful piece of work showed that Glover wasn't worried about any of that, or trying to present himself as 'hey, I'm this now, guys'
- he just wanted to make music that felt true to him.
was also a huge experiment in the same vein. He never went into the show with an idea that is was going to be successful. "I only really cared about if my parents thought it was cool, if my cousins thought it was cool," he said backstage at the Golden Globes last night:
And this speech gives a lot of insight into why Donald Glover is on top of the world right now. He's just a cool guy. Nobody minds him being up there. "My instinct is always to under-promise and over-deliver," he said. He never tries to be more than exactly what he is, and that kind of self-confidence and humility is so attractive to both a musical and television scene that is craving honesty more than ever before.
But still, Glover had a huge risk of failure by deviating from the familiar with both Awaken and Atlanta. As Donald Glover shows here though, huge risk also means huge reward. His story thus far is a huge inspiration. Sometimes it doesn't feel like honesty is attractive enough for people, but Glover is a shining example about why you should stay true to yourself, and not care so much about what other people think. Your spot at the top right now is well deserved, Donald. Keep doing what you're doing.
