It's snowing in New York, but no matter where you hang your headphones, the mixtape will keep you warm (or chill?). It's the first mixtape of 2011, and even more exciting, pretty soon we'll be celebrating our hundredth collection of Friday-friendly tunes. Hard to believe we've been doing it for this long, but it's also hard to believe a lot of things, like the recent strange string of mass animal deaths, and the existence of Paula Abdul's Live To Dance. So let's forget all that and mellow out. PLAY BUTTON.

    1. "Strictly Game" - Harlem Shakes - Technicolor Health

New year, new mixtape, keeping it positive. It's only fitting that we lead off with the anthem of new beginnings from the awesome (and unfortunately now defunct) New York rock band Harlem Shakes, who released this record in 2009 (and it still rings true two NYE's later).

    2. "Still" - jj - kills

jj have become the recent masters of inverse remixes... taking popular beats and instead of drastically changing the beats (and sometimes using the same lyrics), they erase the "raps" and insert very mellow, jj style verses. The result is something very wacky (that has appeared here before). This is off the "mixtape" they dropped on Christmas Eve, which also feautures beats by Jay-Z and Kanye West. I think this is what indie kids play on the radio when they do drive-by sarcasm.

    3. "Revolving Doors" - Gorillaz - The Fall

My favorite cut from Damon Albarn's rough draft of an album, composed entirely on an iPad. Read more about the hows and whys in the Gorillaz album review.

    4. "A Leaving Song" - Broken Records - Let Me Come Home

2011! New music rolling in... this is a Scotland based band, out of Edinburgh, and this record drops next week.

    5. "The Power Is On" - The Go! Team - Thunder, Lightning, Strike

Devotees will recall David P talking about this track when listing off reasons to be excited about Go! Team in 2011.

    6. "Round and Round" - Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti - Before Today

Just thought you should all know Pitchfork's best song of 2010 (this song) sounds a lot like it belongs in 1973. Just sayin'. Good song though!

    7. "Shell Games" - Bright Eyes - The People's Key

New Bright Eyes record comes out Feb. 15th, so don't worry, the calender will be able to hang itself again sooner than you think.

    8. "Don'tneedya" - Oberhofer - o0O0o0O0o 7"

We caught these guys during CMJ. Oberhofer may not have been the biggest name on the bill but their too-cool-for-school tunes are definitely going to be making a splash this year.

    9. "Equestrian" - U.S. Royalty - Mirrors

More new tunes (this time American made). It's U.S. Royalty (no, not the Hiltons or the Rockafellers), a band out of DC that is dropping their debut record later this month on 4AD.

    10. "I'm Going Down (Bruce Springsteen Cover)" - Vampire Weekend - iTunes Session EP

A copy of this tour favorite is a pretty nice incentive to grab the entire iTunes Session, which includes one other new cut, as well as a few Contra favs like "Cousins" and "Holiday".
