have released the third single from their upcoming fourth album Little Dark Age
. While previous singles "Little Dark Age" and "When You Die" got the full music video treatment, the new track, "Hand It Over", appears thus far as only a lyric video, though a psychedelic one at that.
Unlike the first two singles, "Hand It Over" is a slow-burning electronic psych-rock groove, feeling more like a twisted slow dance jam to be played as the last song during the big high school dance. It's unsurprising that MGMT would consider a change of pace after releasing two tracks that felt stylistically similar, but "Hand It Over" does follow in the same spiritual vein as "When You Die" and the album title track, with an overall melancholic feel and another instance of dropping the f-bomb. I'm not a prude or anything, I just think it's really obvious and a bit gauche when bands repetitively use the word "f***" in their lyrics.
Either way, "Hand It Over" is a solo follow up for the group, maybe not quite as dynamic as the first two singles, but worthy of standing alongside them. There are relatively few details about the upcoming album, there's is no set release date and the full track listing hasn't been released, but it was confirmed the album will feature collaborations with Ariel Pink and Connan Mockasin.
Little Dark Age
is tentatively scheduled to release sometime in February.
