In a strange turn of events that can be credited to Twitter, (the social media site where most interactions end up being a strange turn of events) John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats
made good on his joke about writing a song called "The Ultimate Jedi Who Wastes All The Other Jedi And Eats Their Bones." It all started when The Mountain Goats frontman joked with Star Wars Director Rian Johnson about the title for the upcoming Star Wars film, "The Last Jedi." After the director heard Darnielle's alternate title he reportedly responded with "PLEASE WRITE THIS" and Darnielle went to work. Now we have a new song from The Mountain Goats and you know what? It's actually pretty good.
John Darnielle has always been good at turning strange stories into powerful songs about life, and "The Ultimate Jedi Who Wastes All The Other Jedi And Eats Their Bones" isn't an exception. It tells the story of a Jedi coming of age, starting with the pseudo-patriotic sentiment of "remember those who went before and cleared a way for you / let your deeds give hope and comfort to the living." Then it begins to diverge into madness as you learn that there is a Jedi that waits to kill him and eat his bones, and just his bones because that's where the calcium lies.
This story seems to be about growing up with the intention of doing right but knowing that some force, much greater than you is going to destroy you and there's nothing to be done about it. This song reminds me of "The Best Ever Death Metal Band in Denton" and "Fall Of The Star High School Running Back" the opening tracks off of All Hail West Texas
which both use humour to get their somber lessons across. Or maybe I'm just taking a joke a little too serious, anyway you decide for yourself.
