Let's just start this out by saying if you haven't heard Ellie Goulding's newest album, Halycon, you need to. With her first two albums shooting her to musical stardom, you'd think Goulding would stick to the formula that has worked for her in the past - and you'd be wrong. Halycon offers intricate melodies, incredible vocals, and much more emotional drive than the previous two. It's really, quite amazing.

Residents of Royal Oak, Michigan seem to think so too.

As snow turns to brown slush, temperatures stay bitterly cold, and people search for any reason to stay indoors, Goulding fans brave the weather, waiting outside just for a chance to get a good seat. At Royal Oak Music Theatre, a good seat is hard to miss. Unlike many venues, the stage is only about two feet off the ground while three levels of general floor provide almost all concert goers a clear view. Even Goulding herself noticed the change. "I very much like this arrangement. It gives me a better view of all your faces!" Still, waiting in the cold wasn't for nothing. Those who were lucky enough to get up close were given an incredibly intimate view of the amazing performance.

As a frequent concert goer, I gauge the performance based on three
criteria: How well the act sounded, how unique they made the experience, and how enthusiastic the crowd is. This show knocked all three out of the park. If recording Halycon was as vocally challenging as it sounds, you couldn't notice while listening to Goulding soar through her melodies. There lies the true beauty of an Ellie Goulding live show. The energy of her melodies mixed with the intricacy of her vocals makes every show an unbelievably individual experience. As the crowd sang along, Goulding had her fun with trying to trick them with her vocals, altering riffs and pitches, spinning an amazing musical web; one which everyone should try to see. Seriously, you'll be glad you did.

One of the special treats of the night was an intimate acoustic performance of Goulding's classic Guns and Horses. For more of Ellie's acoustic wonder, check out Baeble's own acoustic set featuring all of your favorite Goulding classics.
