Our favorite Rihanna
, is back with a brand new single, and damn, does it show off her growth as a vocalist. We can always count on SZA to deliver some seriously heartbreaking stories, like "Hiiijack"
and even her completely transformative interpretation of PARTYNEXTDOOR's "Come And See Me"
, and with this new one, "Drew Barrymore," this might just be her most personal yet.
The lyrics are stunningly poignant and specific, "Why is it so hard to accept the party is over? / You came with your new friends / And her mom jeans and her new Vans / And she's perfect and I hate it, oh so glad you made it,"
she sings in the first verse and then jumps into a lyrically vague chorus, breaking it up nicely, asking if she's warm enough. All of this is over a guitar so distorted, it sounds like it's underwater, the beat is heavy and also beach-y, giving off a sonically warm vibe, although SZA doesn't necessarily feel like she's radiating that same warmth for her lover.
When we saw SZA throw it down at Panorama
last summer, we were absolutely blown away. She's an artist to watch this year, and we can't wait to support her along the way.
