A malfunctioning camera stole the visuals for this one (the photo above is one I snapped during their show at Terminal 5 last year), so a few choice words will have to do. The Rural Alberta Advantage played an early engagement at The Mercury Lounge this past Wednesday, using the cozy occasion to kick the tires on material from their soon to be released album Departing. In fact, the impassioned Canadian trio strolled through the entire record, cutting up new numbers here and there with the nuggets of their '09 release Hometowns that most in attendance came to hear. "The Ballad of the RAA", "The Deadroads", and "Frank, AB" probably provided the most enthusiastic responses of the night.

But the real treat here was the unexpected sneak peak at the new numbers. For the folks who fell for the string breaking acrobatics, furious rhythms, and sing along hysterics of Hometowns, Departing should certainly satisfy. Not much of what The RAA do has changed. Niles Edenloff still does one of the best impressions of Jeff Magnum out there...his guitar sounding like it should probably crumble under the weight of his heavy handed hits. Paul Banwatt is still the band's best asset. His sticks are an absolute blur as he funnels around the drum set, filling every bit of space he possibly can with pound-it-out rhythms and a flock of furious fills. Providing a woozy glow of keyboards, Amy Cole counters such rough and tumble elements with a much needed sense of melody. It all makes for a rather enthralling listen, and should position the band for its biggest year to date. - David Pitz

Departing sees its release on March 1st, via Saddle Creek/Paper Bag Records. You can grab that album's 6th song "Stamp" below. All it will cost you is your email address.
