is known to many as the star of Lovesick
, a british comedy on Netflix, but he is also a talented songwriter. The South African-born songwriter has been releasing albums for years, and has enjoyed quite a bit of success.
His latest single, "Raising The Dead" sounds like a modern take on a bar-room sing-a-long. Every time the chorus comes along, Flynn belts into "Ah-oh raising the dead / raising the dead / raising the dead" and this would be the part where every drunk joins in. Flynn gives this song an almost cinematic feel, throwing in ambient sounds as well as a drummer who is always a little behind on the beat. It creates a scene that would be found on a sailboat or a back alley. The song reminds me of Tom Waits album Mule Variations
in the best kind of way.
"Raising The Dead" is an autobiographical song for the singer. "My Dad died when I was 18, and that was quite a galvanising experience," Flynn says, "and there's often an element of that in anything Im writing; every big loss that you suffer in life, I think everything comes through the conduit of that. I had a really strong sense of my daughter having elements of my Dad when she came along, and it made me kind of laugh - that cyclical sense, of thinking of my daughter as my Dad."
He has announced that he will be playing SXSW this year, as well as given us the tracklist to his upcoming album, Sillion.
