If you've never had the chance to see Shearwater live, take it. I saw them open for Sharon Van Etten at Bowery Ballroom back in 2012, and their atmospheric Americana rock was just as delightful as SVE's dramatic folk storytelling. It's weird to think that it's been nearly four years now since Animal Joy was released (though they released another record in 2013, Fellow Travelers, Animal Joy will forever be my Shearwater record). The band is finally returning with a new album, Jet Plane and Oxbow, on 1/22, and the band has shared the first new single, "Only Child."

One good adjective for Shearwater has always been "expansive." Their music feels big enough to fill the Texas plains that gave us Jonathan Meiburg, the main creative force behind the project. And "Only Child" is no exception. If you took 70s Americana and fused it to the lush orchestration of neo-folk rock acts like Bon Iver and Delta Spirit, you'd get this new track. We can't wait to hear where this album takes us.
