The music created by Dublin alternative four-piece Kodaline will hijack a diverse assortment of souls. Their debut EP, released last year, featured four songs, all of which offered their own marque of sincerity stretching from the indie rock simplicity of "Perfect World" to the highest reaches of the arena-suited "All I Want", where frontman Steve Garrigan squeezes hearts with a voice comparable only to that of Coldplay's Chris Martin. Kodaline is a perfect emblem of a band that will undoubtedly explode in the U.S. as their genre melding music is accessible to fans of any palate.
We were thrilled to catch the Irishmen during their recent trip to the States when they made a profound pit stop at Hype Machine's Hype Hotel down in Austin this March. Their debut full-length studio album, In A Perfect World is due out next month, June 10th, and we're confident this concert capture will be the perfect icebreaker with your new favorite band: Kodaline.
Loosen up and lose your mind You never know what you could find on the other side. A hundred thousand butterflies floating in the orange skies above my head I wandered lonely as a cloud Floating high above the ground with aeroplanes. I hear the sound of hummingbirds The sweetest sound I've ever heard, I can't describe Oh oh, I'm dreaming up a world with you Oh oh, and all the things that we could do oh oh Feeling like a plastic bag Spinning 'round but slowly going nowhere fast. Waterfalls inside my eyes Am I on the other side, am I dreaming? Holding on to a dolphin's fin He helps me swim when I can't swim, he's friendly. Loosen up and lose your mind You never know what you could find on the other side. Oh oh, I'm dreaming up a world with you Oh oh, and all the things that we could do oh oh oh oh oh oh - How's it going? We're a band called Kodaline from Ireland, and this is our first time in South Bay. Yeah, it's great to see all you guys. Walking on a tightrope wire Dropping poison pills of fire Hypnotized Euphoria will be here soon Turn the lights down, let the answers fill the room Oh oh, I'm dreaming up a world with you oh oh Oh oh, and all the things that we could do A hundred thousand butterflies Floating in the orange skies above my head. Oh oh oh Loosen up and lose your mind You never know what you could find on the other side. Oh oh And all the things that we could do Ooh ooh All of the things that made you feel better You should take a pen and write it down, It'd make you feel better All of the things that made you feel better You should write it all down and put it in a letter. How many nights do you lie dreaming? I'm counting the days since you went away When I lost my heart, life lost all meaning What I would give to see you again? I'll pray for you Do you pray for me? I'll pray for you And you slipped away from me without talking The look in your eye was stronger than this And I drink alone to stop me from weeping What's left of my heart is forever yours Forever yours And I know I'll pray for you Do you pray for me? I'll pray for you Oh eh oh eh ah oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh ooh ooh eh eh eh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh eh oh oh ooh - Next song we're going to play is a song called High Hopes. Broken bottles in the hotel lobby It seems to me like I'm just scared of never feeling it again But I know it's crazy to believe in silly things But it's not that easy I remember it now, it takes me back to when it all first started But I've only got myself to blame for it, and I accept it now It's time to let it go, go out and start again But it's not that easy Yeah, but I've got high hopes It takes me back to when we started High hopes, when you let it go, go out and start again High hopes, when it all comes to an end But the world keeps spinning around And in my dreams, I meet the ghosts of all the people who have come and gone Memories, they seem to show up so quick but they leave you far too soon Naïve, I was just staring at the barrel of a gun And I do believe that Yeah, but I've got high hopes It takes me back to when we started High hopes, when you let it go, go out and start again High hopes, (oh) when it all comes to an end But the world keeps spinning Yeah, the world keeps spinning around Oohh oohh oohh oohh yeah whoah High hopes It takes me back to when we started High hopes, when you let it go, go out and start again High hopes, oh, let the world keeps spinning Yeah, this world keeps spinning oohh And how this world keeps spinning around - Thanks very much. Yeah. We're a band called Kodaline and thanks a million for checking us out. And yeah, have a great night. Running through the heat, heart beating You shine like silver in the sunlight You light up my cold heart It feels right in the sun, the sun We're running around and around Like nothing else could matter in our lives But wait, but wait, but wait The sun will stop shining soon And you'll be dark in my life Yeah, you'll be gone, it's as simple as a change of heart But I'm not going to think about the future A love like this won't last forever I know that a love like this won't last forever But I, I don't really mind Yeah, I don't really mind at all We're slipping into the night love It grows dark but you don't mind Hiding in the back streets, yeah, you never notice me All that I was thinking about was cleaning up my conscience Lost in the memory as it shakes up the corners of my heart Was it my mistake? Or maybe it was just as simple as a change in your heart Just as simple as a change ah I know now a love like this won't last forever I know that a love like this won't last forever But I, I know that a love like this won't last forever I know that a love like this won't last forever, oh no Oh oh oh oh oh oh A love like this won't last (forever) A love like this, a love like this A love like this won't last forever whoa - Thank you. - Thanks for a million again. Cheers All I want is nothing more To hear you knocking at my door 'Cause if I could see your face once more I could die a happy man I'm sure And when you said your last goodbye I died a little bit inside And I lay in tears in bed all night Alone without you by my side But if you loved me Why'd you leave me? Take my body Take my body All I want is And all I need is To find somebody. I'll find somebody like you. Ooh ooh ooh Ooh ooh ooh You, like you See you brought out the best of me A part of me I've never seen You took my soul and wiped it clean Our love was made for movie screens But if you loved me Why'd you leave me? Take my body Take my body All I want is And all I need is To find somebody I'll find somebody Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh yeah If you loved me Why'd you leave me? Take my body Take my body All I want is And all I need is To find somebody I'll find somebody like you ooh ooh ooh - Thanks very much guys. Cheers. Have a great night. - Thank you.
For Kodaline, music isnt just music. Its therapy, says singer Steve Garrigan.
Break-ups make it really easy to write, laughs blonde-haired Steve. When we write music, the first thing we think of is, its therapy for us. Then we think of how we can use that feeling to touch as many people as possible.
Teaching each other the principles of songcraft, the music they came up with some of which can be found on their self titled EP (released in Ireland on Friday 7th September) isnt wan or introspective or self-serving. Instead, its bold, epic and stirring.
Currently maintaining an air of understated mystery (their Facebook bio used to state, merely, were four lads in a band, Kodaline are soon set to unveil themselves to the world with these first four tracks recorded with Steve Harris (producer for Dave Matthews band, mixer for U2).
Steve, Mark and drummer Vinny May all aged 22 and 23 have been working towards this moment for much of their young lives. Growing up in houses just two minutes away from each other in Swords, Steve and Mark met aged eight, when they were the only boys in the school choir. We were there to pick up girls, of course, jokes Mark.
Six years later, at a youth retreat, both were placed in the same house and both took guitars. A musical bond was formed over late night singalongs. Returning to Swords, they recruited Vinny, who also lived two minutes away (Swords is a small place, for a big town says Steve), and set about forming the first of myriad bands. The line-up was recently completed by bassist Jason Boland.
Having spent two years doing nothing but writing, with just a belief in their talent keeping them afloat, Kodaline is their be-all and end-all. I dropped out of college and my parents were just freaking out saying, What the fuck are you doing? says Steve. There was no deal in place and no money, we just thought, Fuck it, lets have a crack at it.
The bands name, incidentally, means absolutely nothing for the moment they wanted something they could take ownership of. We made it up ourselves, but we later found out its a character on fuckin World Of Warcraft, says Mark. I promise you, weve never even played the game. Its just a bizarre coincidence.
Mark and Steve clearly have a strong friendship. We can basically read each others mind at this point because weve known each other so long, says Steve.
Currently planning another EP, live dates and further down the line a debut album, Kodaline are now theyre hoping their music will provide therapy for others too. "Music should have a purpose, you know," says Steve, "Our purpose is honesty."
