While everyone was busy playing in the dirt at this years Coachella Main Stage, we were chillin in the beautiful California Valley sun in a very old hollywood-esque poolside Cabana so we could shoot our Festival Fever Sessions. Even though Coachella has an amazing atmosphere loaded with plenty of diverse acts, sometimes its nice to get that kind of seclusion from all the madness for some unexpectedly heavy moments. Think about that one song that changed your life and the impact it had on you. That feeling is what Richie Follin is going for with the music of Guards.
They were kind enough to stop by and perform their newest single "Silver Lining", which ended up becoming a perfect fit for the serene, dreamy backdrop of our patio in the middle of the desert.
You say you got me in the middle of something Yeah you got me in the middle of something now Only how You say you took it from the bottom measure The one and only simple pleasure now Only how I wanna live forever on a boat out in the sea I wanna build a happy home, a home for you and me I wanna touch the silver lining we'll be shining everywhere I wanna live forever I don't care I will take that simple pleasure I will take it and be gone forever now Only how I wanna live forever on a boat out in the sea I wanna build a happy home, a home for you and me I wanna touch the silver lining we'll be shining everywhere I wanna live forever I don't care I will be fine I'll have you anytime I'd make you mine It's just a simple line I will be fine I'll have you anytime We'll live forever you will see Just you and me The things you say are in the way Aren't really there it's just a scare I wanna live forever on a boat out in the sea I wanna build a happy home, a home for you and me I wanna touch the silver lining we'll be shining everywhere I wanna live forever I don't care really proud of it. I know, I personally think it's, you know, I've been in tons of bands and put out a lot of records since I've been playing music. And it's the thing I'm most proud of, so, I just want as many people to hear it as possible. It's weird you know, 'cause there's this like initial hype period that keeps building and building and then when the album finally comes out and it's like this is your statement and this is what you have to stand on. And I feel like it's been well received and to go finally play these songs that we've been sitting on for so long and so many people in the audience know them...the lyrics and stuff. Once you put it out, it's not really yours, it's like, just as much yours as it is the people who bought it and listen to it. Swimming in a sea of catastrophe A resoution of one digging up your loss On a better day I'd hope to give it all away Yes on a better day it could have been another way But it ain't, not so far You know I never wanted all that pain You know I couldn't get it all away Pictures of you you really got that attitude with your swollen cause I could have swallowed all your force A resolution of one Digging up your loss Night and day, I wouldn't have it any other way Honey bear I gave so much as half to care Leave it alone I'm through with picking up that phone It's a reckess pace I'm done with saving face Once again, here we are You know I never wanted all that pain You know I couldn't get it all away Pictures of you you really got that attitude with your swollen cause I could have swallowed all your force A resolution of one Digging up your sun As a matter of fact, I could not give it any back There you go You're giving me that antidote Once again, here we are You know I never wanted all that pain You know I couldn't get it all away Pictures of you you really got that attitude with your swollen cause I could have swallowed all your force A resolution of one Digging up your loss done that exact setup but we thought we'd do something special because we just love your website so much. without a guitar before. Never seen him in the lead singer stance. pretend. I wasn't doing these, kind of... I mean hopefully, you know, we're giving people the same kind of experience that I value when I go see bands, you know, or the feeling that some of my favorite artists give me, which is like a lot to ask, but that's the whole reason I think we're doing it. And the most we could ask is that somebody gets such a heavy feeling from your music or from your live show. 'Cause the shows that have really impacted me or the songs that have impacted me are really kind of like life changing, you know? It's really just as heavy of a moment as anything in life. Tell me how to plant the seed Tell me how to grow the leaves Who comes to you in your need If I were to take the lead Teach me how to turn the key Tell me how to set you free Now it's all coming true What's a boy supposed to do With a girl, a girl like you A girl like you A girl like you A girl like you A girl like you A girl like you Take it all it's there for you Taking all is what we do If you need, she'll help you through Now it's all coming true What's a boy supposed to do With a girl, a girl like you A girl like you You You You A girl like you If I talk it has to be Then all I need is there for me Here she comes, a girl like you Now it's all coming true What's a boy supposed to do With a girl, a girl like you Now it's all coming true What's a boy supposed to do With a girl, a girl like you A girl like you You You A girl like you
Artist Bio
Guards was formed in New York City when Richie James Follin returned from a European tour to a recording studio with nothing in it but a broken electric 12 string guitar and an omnichord. He wrote and recorded a few songs for his little sister to sing on ,but ended up singing on the songs himself. He enlisted the help of his friends (Caroline Polachek of Chairlift, James Richardson of MGMT, Loren Shane Humphrey of Willowz) and family (Madeline Follin of Cults) to guest on some songs and they spread the word without his knowledge via twitter and the internet. Then, he decided to give the songs away for free.
Richie James Follin is 27 and he is originally from southern California. He started the Willowz (lead singer and guitarist) when he was 19 in 2002 and has released 4 records with them as well as a solo record and multiple other projects.
