Show Review

While some bands are manufactured, put together by label executives with the hopes that they'll make a profit, the all-female indie-pop group The Aces is anything but. The band came together in their hometown of Orem, Utah, when they were just kids - lead singer Cristal and drummer Alisa are sisters, and Mckenna and Katie, the bassist and guitarist respectively, were close friends with Cristal. Things came together naturally when they realized they love to write and perform together.

When The Aces stopped by Baeble's office for their NEXT session with us, they naturally started off by talking about their beginnings as a band. It's easy to tell from their banter that their closeness is genuine. After introducing themselves, the band launched into performances of a few different songs from their debut EP, I Don't Like Being Honest, including "Physical," "Baby Who," and "Stuck." While the sound of their EP has more of an electronic tinge to it, their NEXT session was stripped down and simple, revealing the pure catchiness of their pop melodies and the strength of their songwriting.

Between songs, The Aces told us more about how they've gotten to the point they're at now, taking turns talking about the perks of growing up in Orem, Utah, developing their sound through performing live, and the process of writing and recording their debut EP.

I won't.
Sorry.
I'll keep it.
I was going to say a curse word.
I was going to say, "Holy cow, we're in Sweden.
" I play bass guitar.
- I'm Alisa.
I do drums.
the lead singer.
And together, - We are The Aces.
- People think that we were like created or something.
But these two are sisters and... - We started this band when I was like 8 and she was 10.
And then, Kenna was like Cristal's best friend, so she joined her on.
- Was, isn't anymore.
- Things change.
- You don't have to love who you work with, you know.
- More than anything, I think that we were really close friends first.
And so, I think that there's that kind of foundation for our band, and I think that's why it's lasted as long as it has and why it will continue to because at the end of the day, we just love and respect each other as people and we're like family to each other.
And so, when we make decisions or we're doing anything for our career, there's obviously a lot of input from all four of us and "How do you guys feel about it?", and I think that we just try to run it really fair.
Are we ready to go? - Cool, cool.
Well, we are The Aces, and this is Physical.
We can change our bad habits Try to sleep at night
Lost for the moment I've tried to find
But it's the same thing every time It's some kind of magic
Between you and I But I got to be honest, baby
We just can't get it right

We're just physical
- We're from Orem, Utah, which is south of Salt Lake City about 40 minutes south, and it's beautiful there.
- But it's amazing.
It's like a great place to grow up, and we're lucky to be from there.
- And it's really safe, and it has an amazing music scene actually, which was really good for us growing up because we're able to play like all the local venues.
- It's a college town, and the venue is, it doesn't have a 21 - And there's no drinking.
- Yeah, there's no drinking or anything.
So we're able to play at the venues at a pretty young age and start to build a fan base.
You can try all day to change my mind
- We had so much time as kids to figure out, like, who we wanted to be as musicians.
And we really spend like a decade now doing it and figuring out our sound, and what we wanted to say, and like how we wanted to perform, and look, and everything.
And if it wasn't for those all-ages venues in Provo and stuff, I just don't totally know where we would have gotten that kind of showcase, you know.
Look for answers I never use to wonder why
Search for loving But that always comes in time
Make it look easy I wish I didn't have to try
Out with strangers Use to take all my nights
Would you tell me if I'm right Is it worth your time
You can try all day to change my mind But I can't do that
Because I don't need you now I don't need you now
Baby who?
You want me bad But I don't want you back
Baby who?
Stay together When it starts to fall apart
Nothing's forever It doesn't have to break your heart
If you let it Time will always do you right
For the moment We can push it all
Would you tell me if I'm right Is it worth your time
You can try all day to change my mind But I can't do that
Because I don't need you now I don't need you now
Baby who?
You want me bad But I don't want you back
Baby who?
I ain't good with names If you don't feel the same
Baby who?
Because I don't need you now I don't need you now
Baby who?
You can dry your eyes if you like
You can take your time, you can take your time
Turn it all around if it don't feel right
You can dry your eyes if you like
You can take your time, you can take your time
Turn it all down if you don't feel right
Well, take all your time
Baby who?
Because I don't need you now I don't need you now
Baby who?
You want me bad But I don't want you back
Baby who?
Because I ain't good with names If you don't feel the same
Baby who?
Because I don't need you now I don't need you now
Baby who?
You know I'm stuck, babe Stuck with nowhere to go
- We started writing this record about two years ago.
And we had come out to New York and we're trying to figure out, you know, what's our sound and how do The Aces want like, what do we want to sound like with this debut EP and this album.
We've been trying to write music that was like a bit heavier-sounding like Arctic Monkeys and The Neighbourhood, and we kind of went into this session one day and me and Alisa kind of just looked at each other because we had these melodies coming out of us that were just like real Michael Jackson-esque and really kind of high, and we just kind of looked at each other and was like, - We should just write what naturally come to us, which is like these pop melodies.
Once we had that realization, Stuck was like the next... It's actually the second song we've ever written with our producers.
- It was this big, like, breakthrough moment.
I think it was written in about 45 minutes, basically, just like came out and was on paper and it was done.
And it was the first single we put out, which then obviously snowballed into our signing our first record deal and now getting to do all these amazing things.
So I think Stuck really was the start of it all, and will, like, always be a really special song to us.
Hey, we're The Aces, and this is our single, Stuck.
We talk, we talk 'til we're blue in the face
The words, the words don't resonate
Seasons, they always seem to stay the same
I'm holding on things we said we would change
I'm stuck, babe Stuck with nowhere to go
It cuts, babe, because we're just taking it slow
Well, it's overdue, make your move
Stuck, babe Stuck with nowhere to go
You move, and I don't really know what to say
Too soon, am I supposed to feel this way?
Reach out but I don't wanna get in your way
Too little, too late, I know that's what you're gonna say
I'm stuck, babe Stuck with nowhere to go
It cuts, babe, because we're just taking it slow
Well, it's overdue, make your move
Stuck, babe Stuck with nowhere to go
I see it in your eyes, your eyes, your eyes We ain't satisfied
Waste away our lives, our lives, our lives We ain't satisfied, no
We talk, talk 'til we're blue in the face oh no
Holding on things we said we would change
You know I'm stuck, babe Stuck with nowhere to go
It cuts, babe, because we're just taking it slow
But it's over soon, make your move
Stuck, babe Stuck with nowhere to go
But you know I'm stuck, babe Stuck with nowhere to go, oh no
Stuck, babe Stuck with nowhere to go
I see it in your eyes, your eyes, your eyes We ain't satisfied
Stuck, babe Stuck with nowhere to go
- Yeah, I think we have like a lot of exciting things that are about to happen like, we're going to have the opportunity to go on tour, release more music, and it's just a really exciting time in the process.
- We've been in this band since we were little kids, and we started out just playing live.
And we mostly, we love performing, that's what we always did, so it's kind of like... Unlike most bands today where they start in the studio and then they have to learn how to perform, we started on the stage and then had to learn how to use a studio.
And so, we feel like these past two years being in a studio making a record, we've just been kind of, like, off duty.
And now to get to play again like last night and get back into it, it's like you remember how fun it is and that it's the best part of it all.
You say that you love me, you don't
Oh oh oh oh oh
- Hey, we're The Aces, and you're watching Baeble Music.
You told me you love me, you don't
We're just physical
