Show Review

The magic of Salt Cathedral is the obvious joy that they perform with, which stems from the music but also from their friendship. "We hang out, we have fun the music is just a byproduct of that," remarked Nicolas. It means that there's a sense of intimacy to the music, even as it continues to lend itself to something larger than all of us.

You are Unrecognizably sweet
Always there when I need you Always there when I need you
You are So unassumingly free
Always there when I need you Always there when I need you
Are you waiting on someone Are you waiting
Are you waiting on someone else? I'm not waiting on someone I'm not waiting
I'm not waiting on someone else
Will you give me your love Gimme, gimme your love
Give me your love tonight
Let me give you my love Let me give you my love
Give you my love, girl, girl
Do you carry the weight of the world?
Does it weigh on your shoulders?
Let me lift it up
Wanna take you for all that you're worth
Wanna lay on the earth and grow older
Are you waiting on someone Are you waiting
Are you waiting on someone else?
I'm not waiting on someone I'm not waiting
I'm not waiting on someone else
Will you give me your love Gimme, gimme your love
Gimme your love tonight Let me give you my love.
Let me give you my love
Give you my love tonight, girl.
'Cause you are the little girl of my dreams
Always there when I need you Always there when I need you
You are So unassumingly free
Always there when I need you Always there when I need you
Girl when you're tired at the end of the night.
When you lay on your pillow
I will hold your bones, love
And I'll show you the scope of the world
Grow eternally younger 'Till we're older, girl
Are you waiting on someone Are you waiting
Are you waiting on someone else?
I'm not waiting on someone I'm not waiting
I'm not waiting on someone else
Will you give me your love Gimme, gimme your love
Give me your love tonight Let me give you my love
Let me give you my love Give you my love tonight, girl
'Cause you are the little girl of my dreams

I'm from Columbia.
This is Julie, she's from Columbia as well and we're Salt Cathedral.
Killing each other like animals
Like animals, Will you set me free
compatible...No I'm kidding. No I'm kidding.
- Whoa, it's getting cold and dark.
- Yeah.
This is a really 60 minute interview here.
- This could be the last.
- Yeah.
It's going to be the last.
- The last interview.
The next thing, you know, I'll disappear.
- I definitely think...No, that's funny but it's like we both pull on very different ends of the spectrum which kind of ends up creating this like I think sort of unique, not too hard but like thing just because we like so many different things, you know.
- The thing about compatible, it's like besides the music, music is the byproduct but I think it's like we're like a brother and sister.
We get along, we're good friends, we hang out, we have fun, you know, that's all about it.
And then the music is just the byproduct of that.
- No Love is about...I don't know, I feel like we grew up in Columbia in like 90s kind of Pablo Escobar era, you know, a lot of guerillas, like a lot of...And I would watch the news every night with my parents and it's always violence, you know.
It was always like these horrible things and I've always been very perplexed by like why? Like why do humans have to be, and I mean, it still happens every day and it's probably happened, it's not just modern times, you know, it's happened from throughout history and so it's just kind of like that human element of thinking that like we can cross boundaries through music and pretty much every culture has incorporated like dance in music and we all have bodies, you know.
We're, physically, we're the same and so we can dance with each other, so why not trade loving and dancing for like violence instead of like, you know, killing each other.
So that's what that song is about, I don't know.
It's like something that's important to Yeah, we shot the video in Cartagena in Columbia and the idea was precisely it's that, to like put that out to interact with like a community that might otherwise not, you know, be able to show who they are or how they live, you know.
We shot in Cartagena which is a very touristy place and it's gorgeous but we didn't go and shoot in like the old city with the beautiful mansions and everything, we went to like a community that's like not the most privileged and who is really like showed us, you know, their human side and danced with us and took us in and it was like a very symbiotic thing, it was a beautiful thing.
The producer who did the video, Cumbia Films, they do a lot of social work in the area.
So we did with them.
It was in collaboration and it was just like a very beautiful project.
- Yeah.
- That's great.
Tell me when will we see our brothers stop killing each other?
Like animals, like animals
Will you set me free I'm your brother
and we look like each other We're animals, we're animals
Come with me dancing, we'll find a way
To follow our instincts and not be afraid
Of letting our bodies commit to what they are
Can we get a little closer? Closer
Turn it up, turn it up Set me free, set me free
Turn it up, turn it up I wanna feel the beat
Turn it up, turn it up Set me free, set me free
Turn it up, turn it up I wanna feel the beat.
Tell me why would we much rather just
look at each other like enemies in jealousy
But when you dance with me you'll see
I'm your brother we can dance with each other incessantly, in harmony
So won't you come with me dancing
We'll find a way To follow our instincts
and not be afraid of letting our bodies commit to what they are
Can we get a little closer
Closer
Turn it up, turn it up Set me free, set me free
Turn it up, turn it up I wanna feel the beat
Turn it up, turn it up Set me free, set me free
Turn it up, turn it up I wanna feel the beat
And if you're looking to fight me intermittently
All I've got for you is bread and flowers.
And if you're sitting beside me now
Let's embrace the love and live for each other
And if you're looking to bring me down, no, you won't find me
You won't find me at all
I'm coming over to dance with you, make your body flow
Come with me darling, we'll find a way
To follow our instincts
and not be afraid of letting our bodies reveal their inner core
Can we get a little closer? Closer
Turn it up, turn it up Set me free, set me free
Turn it up, turn it up
I wanna feel the beat
Turn it up, turn it up Set me free, set me free.
Turn it up, turn it up I wanna feel the beat
Turn it up, turn it up Set me free, set me free
Turn it up, turn it up I wanna feel the beat
Turn it up, turn it up Set me free, set me free
Turn it up, turn it up I wanna feel the beat
And if you're looking to fight me intermittently
All I've got for you is bread and flowers.
And if you're sitting beside me now
Let's embrace the love and live for each other
And if you're looking to bring me down, no, you won't find me
You won't find me at all
I'm coming over to dance with you, make your body flow
- Columbia is a Caribbean country in a way, you know.
So there's a lot of reggeaton, a lot of dancehall, there's a lot of like Caribbean styles of music.
So we wanted to incorporate those styles in our record.
- It's called Big Waves/Small Waves.
We've been here for a bit in the US and we're trying to reach out to like those roots we had but in a, in like a new context.
How can you like repurpose that into something that we think is creative? - So the record is full of like surprises and full of like, just like let's try this out and it worked.
- And there was so much freedom to it, that we were just like kids, you know, exploring in a toy shop.
There was no like, "You have to write a hit song because like, you know, we won't recoup or something.
" So it's like, I think it has that magic, you know.
It has that magic of like us exploring and daring to do like different things.
- Yeah, exactly.
When you shut away
My body crumbles down
Into fragments of small pieces
When you fight a war Your love trickles down
Gets depleted
Break me Into fragments.
Hoping that you will Greet me
Into balance Hoping you'll give in
Completely into fragments
Hoping that you will Greet me
Into balance Hoping you'll give in
Completely
Why you gotta take the long way
Keep on arguing the wrong way
Calibrate your love the right way
Don't just sit there and watch it drain
Why you gotta take the long way Keep on arguing the wrong way
Calibrate your love the right way
Don't be static And watch it drain
And when you shut me out My limbs try to branch apart
I fall defeated
Break me Into fragments
Hoping that you will Greet me
Into balance Hoping you'll give in
Completely Into fragments
Hoping that you will greet me
Into balance Hoping you'll give in
Completely
Why you gotta take the long way
Keep on arguing the wrong way
Calibrate your love the right way
Don't just sit there And watch it drain
Why you gotta take the long way
Keep on arguing the wrong way
Calibrate your love the right way
Don't be static And watch it drain
Static And watch it drain
Static and watch it drain
And watch it drain
Static and watch it drain

- Well the only one that we did strip down was Fragments.
I think we're going to keep doing it.
I think it's pretty cool to have a set that we have all like the, all those tracks and all this stuff and then in the middle, like just see this side of us, you know, the more vulnerable way.
- I just think it's a raw song.
It's a very raw song.
So I think it... - It translates better like that.
- It translates.
It's about like that, it's about emotion.
It's similar to No Love in a way.
That it's about conflict and like why.
You know, how conflict just, wars just drain our love? Do you know how like if you fight someone, you end up being so drained? You break things down and it just creates this like negative feeling whereas like you can just, you can always be nice.
You can have problems but you can always deal with them in a nice way, you know.
Like I understand.
And that goes for like the smallest thing, like your every day and your mom and like countries, you know.
There's a way to sit down and talk about things and deal with things.
So I think that's what I'd think about.
Don't be static And watch it drain
And watch it drain
Hey, we're Salt Cathedral and you're watching Baeble Music.
And watch it drain
Static and watch it drain
