Show Review

How many times have you heard this before: "I don't like pop music. It's got no soul, man!" We probably all know that one Motown disciple or that underground college scenester who would say something along those lines, right? Well, it's no doubt that they're missing out on some really good pop music that actually has some grit to it, as best proven by Elizabeth Mencel, aka ROZES.

Following in the same path of Halsey or Banks, ROZES uses her vocal talents to destroy the stereotype that all electronic music is cold and unnatural. A quick listen to any of her songs, from her many collaborations to her stellar solo work, will prove that ROZES knows how to give a song life, whether its done unplugged or done with synths. Armed with a voice that backs as much old-fashioned R&B as modern-day pop, ROZES can give anything she sings on plenty of heart and plenty of personality that will last for days.

ROZES has the certain kind of voice that sticks with you long after you heard it for the first time, so you might remember her from her collaboration on the song "Roses" by the Chainsmokers. With over 200 million views on YouTube and nearly half a billion streams on Spotify, you'd have to be living in a hole in the desert to have not heard this song at least once in your life. As a co-writer and lead singer on the song, ROZES very clearly proved she has the chops to write a megahit, and lucky for us, she's not done writing hits yet. Her debut EP, Burn Wild, gave the singer plenty of room to show off her sensual and bluesy voice over some heavy electronic grooves. If you loved the song "Roses," then you're going to feel right at home with ROZES' solo work thanks to its heavy supply of catchy hooks and personality.

I always gauge a song if I can play it acoustically.
Like that is how I know it's a song for myself and not for another artist because it's like, okay, like I can sit here acoustically and still sing it the way I sing it and it still sounds like a song.
You're a fire and not too hard to start
You burn wild and you burn right through my heart
I'm the fuel that you never thought you'd need
I light you up and you know you light up me
I can't keep keeping it a secret I can't keep keeping it a secret
I can't keep keeping this a secret
Don't want to say goodbye Because I don't think that I
Have it in my soul To keep letting go
You hold me real tight You kiss me hard another time
You be my fire for tonight And then I let you burn wild
Burn wild
And your bright eyes, they look right through my heart
One look at you and I know just what I want
I can't keep keeping it a secret I can't keep keeping it a secret
I can't keep keeping this a secret
Don't want to say goodbye Because I don't think that I
Have it in my soul To keep letting go
You hold me real tight Kiss me hard another time
You be my fire for tonight And then I let you burn wild
Burn wild
A dangerous love A taste of poison, paradise
Bite your lip, get me high
But the pleasure's all mine, the pleasure's all mine
It's just for tonight And even though the sun will rise
I will fight fire with fire Fire with fire
Don't want to say goodbye Because I don't think that I
Have it in my soul To keep letting go
You hold me real tight Kiss me hard another time
You be my fire for tonight And then I let you burn wild
Don't want to say goodbye Because I don't think that I
Have it in my soul To keep letting go
You hold me real tight Kiss me hard another time
You be my fire for tonight And then I let you burn wild
Burn wild
My parents threw me into music lessons at a very young age, so I had recitals and things like that.
And I would actually like learn my favorite Disney songs on the piano and then I would set up my own recitals in the music room.
So it was kind of like I had put myself out there, made people listen to me.
I guess I was doing my high school talent show and, like, I had just been broken up with. And they...everybody knew I was broken up with because I wrote a song about it.
And then I played it on what we had...it was called The Morning Show where the whole high school had to watch it every Wednesday.
And they were like, "Oh, special guest, Liz Mencel, with her new song." And like... So that's when I decided like writing was my... I don't want to say it's my weapon because I don't use it against people but it was my outlet and kind of what I became known for, and then that's what I just developed as my identity.
So it kind of just progressed over time.
I know you haven't heard too much from me
Like I'm a world apart
Your mama says you're doing well and I'm so sorry I haven't been there
I got my baby saying now that's okay But he knows that it's not okay
Why did I fall off When did my heart go under the grave
I blame it on something else
When it all goes down, when it all goes down
Yeah, I've always been the one that was there for you
That was there for you
I know that I've been taking you for granted
I know that I've been leaving you all stranded
When did my heart go under the grave When did my heart go under the grave
When did my heart go under the grave When did my heart go under the grave
When did my heart go under the grave When did my heart go under the grave
I've lost my mind, yeah, I've been captured
By my greed
I let it all slip, yeah, let it all get Away from me
I got my baby saying now that's okay When he knows that it's not okay
Why did I fall off When did my heart go under the grave
I blame it on something else
When it all goes down, when it all goes down
Yeah, I've always been the one that was there for you
That was there for you
I know that I've been taking you for granted
I know that I've been leaving you all stranded
When did my heart go under the grave When did my heart go under the grave
When did my heart go under the grave When did my heart go under the grave
When did my heart go under the grave When did my heart go under the grave
Please say you won't forget about me Please say you won't forget about me
When it all goes down When it all goes down, down
Please say you won't forget about me
I blame it on something else
When it all goes down, when it all goes down
Yeah, I've always been the one that was there for you
That was there for you
I know that I've been taking you for granted
I know that I've been leaving you all stranded
When did my heart go under the grave When did my heart go under the grave
When did my heart go under the grave When did my heart go under the grave
When did my heart go under the grave When did my heart go under the grave
When did my heart go under the grave When did my heart go under the grave
When did my heart go under the grave
It was obviously like such an honor to work with them.
I don't think neither I or The Chainsmokers thought it was going to be as big as it was.
We just kind of met via Twitter and planned a hangout/song writing session, and just like ate Chinese food in Drew's apartment and wrote Roses really.
We had no idea.
We thought it was a cool jam.
Our management, they all thought it was a cool jam.
We showed labels.
They thought, "Oh, cool.
" But nobody thought it was this smash hit.
I was out for a bachelorette party for my future sister-in-law and it came on at a bar.
And I was like, "Please don't tell anybody," like, "Let's just hang out.
" But yeah, I mean it's fun just witnessing things like that and I always, like when I hear it in car, like, I"ll look next to me and see if anybody is, like, listening to it too.
But it's kind of like my best kept secret, I guess.
I wanted to love you I wanted to be with you
You wanted my heart to stop, stop feeling
And you had this attitude
Ice cold, bulletproof Couldn't shoot my love into you
If you're going to do one thing, don't let go
If you're going to cut my strings, well, cut them all
But don't leave me hanging on
I don't know why you did me like this No, I don't know why you ruined my bliss
But you keep me, keep me hanging on
Yeah, we were fine, just sitting sun-kissed
Staring at your lips with your sweat so salty
We were young, we were young, and hanging on
Just hanging on
I wanted to stop you I wanted to run with you
You wanted me to stop, stop trying To explain how difficult
It was to let you go Can someone put a bullet through my head
If you're going to do one thing, don't let go
If you're going to cut my strings, well, cut them all
But don't leave me hanging on
I don't know why you did me like this No, I don't know why you ruined my bliss
But you keep me, keep me hanging on
And we were fine, just sitting sun-kissed
Staring at your lips with your sweat so salty
We were young, we were young, and hanging on
Just hanging on
If you're going to do one thing, don't let go
If you're going to cut my strings, well, cut them all
But don't leave me hanging on
I don't know why you did me like this No, I don't know why you ruined my bliss
But you keep me, keep me hanging on
And we were fine, just sitting sun-kissed
Staring at your lips with your sweat so salty
We were young, we were young, and hanging on
Just hanging on
Just hanging on
Just hanging on

Artist Bio

With her pristine vocals, expressive lyrics and seductive look, its no surprise that everything is coming up ROZES. Born and bred in Philadelphia, PA, ROZES is an artist in full bloom, touching the sky with her infectious brand of alternative, R&B-infused, electronic pop.

The world officially met ROZES in September of 2014, when she released her debut single, Everything to rave reviews. The same year, she was featured on Just a Gents Limelight, which shot to #1 on HypeM and has millions of listens on SoundCloud. ROZES voice is extremely powerful in its unique, light-burning way, described Hilly Dilly. And when everything comes together a minute or two in, youre hit with a wall of sound that will have you instantly in awe.

Following the success of Everything, ROZES released two more powerful singles: In and Out and "R U Mine," which Idolator called a soaring synth pop anthem," and a great track made even better by the sheer quality of her voice."

After ROZES accepted an invitation to play at Neon Golds legendary Pop Shop at Babys All Right, the record label heralded ROZES as falling to earth somewhere amidst the holy trinity of Banks, Lana and Halsey. Perhaps thats because ROZES, as she would affirm, writes whats real, whats true whats almost killed her and whats keeping her alive.

Its clear that others have begun to stop and take notice of ROZES. The hugely successful duo The Chainsmokers handpicked her to co-write and sing on Top 40 track Roses. The decision resulted in a truly infectious sound highlighted by flawless harmonies. Rozes performed with The Chainsmokers at the Billboard Hot 100 Music festival at Jones Beach last August, The Late Late Show with James Corden and on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Rozes has been featured on prominent media outlets like Billboard, Hello Giggles, and All Things Go and received critical acclaim for her early 2016 EP release Burn Wild and her debut performances at this year's SXSW and Coachella festivals.

And now, after a huge feature on All Of Me with Big Gigantic & Logic, everything is coming up ROZES. Check out her latest single, Under The Grave out now.
