Show Review

The timing for our newest Bands + Brews couldn't be more perfect. To say that the jazz-infused, Philadelphia-based, electro pop duo Marian Hill have a lot of momentum would be a massive understatement. If you've spent any time camped out in front of the television of late, you've probably noticed Apple's funky new AirPods commercial. The thing that makes that commercial work so brilliantly? That would be "Down"; the lead track from the group's 2016 album, Act One.

The band also recently teamed up with Fifth Harmony's Lauren Jauregui on a funky slice of sample goodness called "Back To Me"; a track which is currently approaching 10 million plays on Spotify. All of this has Act One flying off the shelves...figuratively speaking, of course. You and I both know there are no record store shelves anymore (Sigh...).

So yes, we feel incredibly lucky to have had the opportunity to bring the band by our space for an extremely intimate version of Bands + Brews earlier this winter. With The Blue Point Brewing Company fueling the fun, Marian Hill showed why they're one of the more unique outfits currently inhabiting the world of indie pop. Here, singer Samantha Gongol and producer Jeremy Lloyd get our exclusive gathering of winter revelers going with an ultra-smooth blend of room rattling beats, breathy vocals, and funky flashes of sax. Because let's face it...our session could really use more sax, errr, appeal. Locking eyes with nearly everyone in the room, Gongol drew the audience in close the band's seductive sound. Backed by Lloyd's strategically cut beats, Marian Hill had the entire room cast under their spell. Now it's your turn.

I could tell you all about it
If I just knew where to start
Thought that I would never doubt it
Till the day I fell apart
Not a complicated story
A beginning and an end
Don't know what you did before me
I don't care 'bout where you've been
Sorry, I know I'm impossible I don't know
why I've been needing to take it slow I don't know what to say
I know why he's still dancing in my brain
I, I, I'm with you and it's not the same
I know why I've been leaving things unsaid
I, I, I'm sleeping in the wrong bed
Bed, bed, bed, bed, bed, bed, bed, bed Wrong bed
You could tell me all about her
'Bout the way she said your name
And how you couldn't live without her
How you'll never be the same
We could play that game forever
Scratching at each other's scars
Tell me, how would that be better?
Wouldn't get us very far
Baby, you're tired, just let it go Move closer
No need to talk, we can take it slow There's nothing more to say
I know why he's still dancing in my brain
I, I, I'm with you and it's not the same
I know why I've been leaving things unsaid
I, I, I'm sleeping in the wrong bed
I know why he's still dancing in my brain
I, I, I'm with you and it's not the same
I know why I've been leaving things unsaid
I, I, I'm sleeping in the wrong bed
I, I know why I know why
I, I know why, why
I know why I know why
I know why why, why, wh-wh-wh-wh-wh-wh-wh-why, why
I, I, I'm sleeping I, I, I'm sleeping
I, I, I'm sleeping in the wrong bed
The wrong, the wrong The wrong, the wrong
Wr-wrong The wrong, the wrong
Didn't even really wanna go But if you get me out, you get a show
And there's so many bodies on the floor So, baby, we should go and add some more
Are you down, d-d-down, d-d-down, d-d-down, down, down?
Down, d-d-down, d-d-down, d-d-down, down, down?
And everywhere I look are people's hands Thrown up in the air to help 'em dance
Come on, baby, catch me if you can I know you don't have any other plans
Are you down, d-d-down, d-d-down, d-d-down, down, down?
Down, d-d-down, d-d-down, d-d-down, down, down?
Are you down, d-down, down,
d-d-d-d-down, down, down, down, d-d-down,
down? Down, d-down, down, d-d-d-d-down, down,
down, d-down, down, d-down.
Are you down?
Are you down? Are you d-d-down?
Are you down? Are you down?
Are you d-d-d-d-down? Are you d-down, down, d-d-d-d-down, down?
Down, down, down, d-d-d-down?
You know we could put 'em all to shame and now isn't the time to play it safe
Isn't this the reason why you came? So, baby, don't you let it go to waste
Are you down, d-d-down, d-d-down, d-d-down, down, down?
Down, d-d-down, d-d-down, d-d-down, down, down?
And every single thing is feeling right Started as a quiet Friday night
I don't really think that we should fight this
What if we don't stop until it's light?
Are you down, d-d-down, d-d-down, d-d-down, down, down?
Are you down, d-d-down, d-d-down, d-d-down, down, down?
Are you down, d-down, down,
d-d-d-d-down, down, down, d-d-down,
down? Down, d-down, down, d-d-d-d-down, down,
down, d-d-down, down, d-down Are you down?
Are you down? Are you d-d-down?
Are you down? Are you down?
Are you d-d-d-d-down? Are you d-down, down, d-d-d-d-down, down?
Down, down, down, d-d-d-down?
Are you? Are you?
Are you d-d-down, down?
Are you? Are you d-d-d-d-d-d-d-down?
Are you down, d-down, down,
d-d-d-d-down, down, down, d-d-down,
down? Down, d-down, down, d-d-d-d-down, down,
down, d-d-down, down, d-down Are you down?
Are you down? Are you d-d-down?
Are you down? Are you down?
Are you d-d-d-d-down?
Are you down, d-down, down, d-d-d-d-down, down,
Down, down, down, d-d-d-down?
Are you down? Are you down?
Are you d-d-down? Are you down?
Are you down? Are you d-d-d-d-down?
Are you down, d-down, down? Down
- This next song is called, Talk to Me.
Got me running round Got me playing for your change, you do
You're trying to wear me down but, baby, I'm not playing games with you
- That's right, because... What you looking for? Did you lose your way?
In this tug of war, you're a lightweight
I'll be sitting tight, so do whatever you like to do
I know, you know you've been restless
I know, you know you could get this
You got to do something reckless Come on, baby, won't you talk to me?
- That's right.
Got me in a fix while you're playing with your girl,
you do But you're up to your tricks
and so you call me when she's out of view
But if she's everything that you're looking for,
Why you calling me? Because I give you more
Go make up your mind, because I'm not waiting in line for you
You know, I know you've been restless
I know, you know you could get this
You got to do something reckless Come on, baby, won't you talk to me?
I know, you know you've been restless
I know, you know you could get this
You got to do something reckless Come on, baby, won't you talk to me?
Talk to me Talk, talk, talk to me, me
I know, you know, we know, there's something to be said
Inching past the daydreams, inching towards your bed
I hope you know I'll go away if you don't try
It's time to open up and let me come inside
You know, I know you've been restless
I know, you know you could get this
You got to do something reckless Come on, baby, won't you talk to me?
I know, you know you've been restless
I know, you know you could get this
You got to do something reckless Come on, baby, won't you talk to me?
Talk, talk, talk, talk to me Talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk,
talk, t-t-talk to me Talk, talk, talk, talk to me
Come on, baby, won't you talk to me?
- Thank you.
Call me up and I'll come over
every single time
In your driveway Still alone,
I'm trying to rewind
In your bedroom, in the dark,
we play with old mistakes
After midnight You're asleep,
but I stay wide awake
Morning comes and we start over
Over again
Take my hand, let it go Make it stop, hold me close
But it's still the same old thing
Pick me up, put me down Walk away, turn around
But it's still the same old thing
Toss and turn, then relax Running from, running back
But it's still the same old thing
In your arms yet again Never want it to end
But it's still the same thing
Call you up and you'll come over
every single time
See your headlights Feel my heart rate
slowly start to climb
In my doorway We don't talk,
there's nothing left to say
Grab your hair and pull you close
but I am miles away
Morning comes and we start over
Over again
Take my hand, let it go Make it stop, hold me close
But it's still the same old thing
Pick me up, put me down Walk away, turn around
But it's still the same old thing
Toss and turn, then relax Running from, running back
But it's still the same old thing
In your arms yet again Never want it to end
But it's still the same thing
Wish I knew the start to end I say I do, but I pretend
Here by night, and gone by day I always think, but never say
Wish I knew, W-w-wish, wish I, wish I knew the start to
end, end D-d-d-d-day, day, day,
day, day, day, day, day Da da da da da da
Take my hand, let it go Make it stop, hold me close
But it's still the same old thing
Pick me up, put me down Walk away, turn around
But it's still the same old thing
Take my hand, let it go Make it stop, hold me close
But it's still the same old thing
Pick me up, put me down Walk away, turn around
But it's still the same old thing
Take my hand, let it go Make it stop, hold me close
But it's still the same old thing
Pick me up, put me down Walk away, turn around
But it's still the same old thing
- This song is called I Want You.
Thank you.
Well, babe, I've got this drink Turns out I've got some space
I like to drink alone And I hate this empty place
I'd like to spend some time You look like Friday night
I'd like to dress you up and Take you on a carpet ride
I've seen a couple things and I know the way it goes
Like everybody says because everybody knows
Maybe you're the one for me We could be so cliche
I hate to see you leave but love to watch you walk away
I've been so tired on the weekend I've been holding on too tight
I never thought I'd be thinking, "I want..."
I spent the whole summer sleeping You've been staying up all night
I never thought I'd be thinking, "I want you."
I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I want
Don't make me play this game I don't have the time to waste
Don't need to read my mind because I'll just tell you straight
Why don't you show me 'round? And I can show you off
And if we're not too careful, baby, we can both get lost
I've been so tired on the weekend I've been holding on too tight
I never thought I'd be thinking, "I want..."
I spent the whole summer sleeping You've been staying up all night
I never thought I'd be thinking, "I want you."
I want all of you I want you,
So let me take you for a while
Because I... I've been so tired on the weekend
I've been holding on too tight I never thought I'd be thinking,
"I want..." I spent the whole summer sleeping
You've been staying up all night I never thought I'd be thinking,
"I want..."
I've been so tired on the weekend I've been holding on too tight
I never thought I'd be thinking, "I want..."
I spent the whole summer sleeping You've been staying up all night
I never thought I'd be thinking, "I want you."
I want you I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I want you
So let me take you for a while Because I...
I want you
I been trying to wipe you outta my mind Begging you to call me some other time
Looking in the rearview, hoping that I leave you behind
Thinking 'bout the things I know I should do
Thinking 'bout how I don't ever need you Thinking 'bout you daily
Thinking maybe you should come through
- That's right.
Because I been trying to shake it But I know there ain't no mistaking
I been trying to shake it But I know there ain't no mistaking
Thought I could deny this craving, caught me gazing, now I'm caving in
Thought that I could break it, but I think you know
there ain't no mistaking
There ain't no mistaking
There ain't no mistaking
There ain't no, no, no, no
I been trying to kick you out of my head Loving all the extra space in my bed
Falling into daydreams Then I think about what you said
You said, "Girl, you got that high-life, double-time swing
and I'm like a low-key, summertime drink
Don't know how to fight it Tell me, baby, what do you think?"
I been trying to shake it But I know there ain't no mistaking
I been trying shake it But I know there ain't no mistaking
Thought I could deny this craving, caught me gazing, now I'm caving in
Thought that I could break it, but I think you know
there ain't no mistaking
There ain't There ain't no mistaking
There ain't no, no, no
There ain't no There ain't no
There ain't no There ain't no
Tried so hard to get free, breaking with the current
Put up my guard Couldn't see
We were right in front of me
I can't sleep Can't you see?
Baby, what you do to me Tried so hard
Now, I see
I been trying to shake it But I know there ain't no mistaking
I been trying to shake it But I know there ain't no mistaking
Thought I could deny this craving, caught me gazing, now I'm caving in
Thought that I could break it, but I think you know
there ain't no mistaking
There ain't no mistaking
There ain't no, no, no, no
There ain't no mistaking
There ain't no, no, no, no, no
There ain't no mistaking

Artist Bio

Act One, the debut full-length from songwriting duo Marian Hill, was written and produced in its entirety by Jeremy Lloyd (music/lyrics/production) and Samantha Gongol (music/lyrics/vocals). The multi-talented duo, who have been collaborating in one form or another since high school, have shifted the classic paradigm of a woman on a stage and a man with a piano to a woman on a mic and a man with a laptop -- and the results are seductive and vivid. Tempting paradox with a blend of blues and bass, acoustic and digital, classic and modern, Marian Hill have arrived.

Two years ago Sam and Jeremy wrote and recorded Whisky over spring break in Jeremys parents basement. When they released it for free on Soundcloud later that summer it was the only song theyd written for the project, and in a little over a years time they had recorded their first EP in a bedroom, amassed millions of plays on various platforms, sold out shows across the country and featured in high profile commercials. They signed to Republic Records in early 2015, released the Sway EP, and settled in to write and record their debut album over the course of the following year with a plan to push their unique sound to its fullest potential.

For the first 50 seconds of Down you might think youre at a supper club in the 1920s, but when the bass drops out of nowhere you couldnt be anywhere but 2016. Act One then takes you on a journey through the complexities of modern relationships, with each song inhabiting a specific and charged relationship lyrically, melodically, and sonically. I Know Why constantly transforms and reinvents itself as the vocals grapple with a secret while Mistaken is the hardest of sax trap with a classic songwriting backbone. Same Thing is the saddest part of the album, a haunting ballad depicting serene resignation of a doomed relationship, but castanets rise from the ashes as I Want You closes out the night in a pure moment of optimistic electricity, a glance across a crowded room that changes everything.

Marian Hills one of a kind sound is present throughout blues harmonies blend with sparse hip hop drums, horns blast under classic vocal melodies, and soloistic vocal chops sit side by side with clear, intimate lyrics. Youve never heard this before, yet its surprisingly familiar. And its only the beginning.
