Show Review

It's an unspoken law in rock music: If you start a band consisting of only two people, guitar and drums, prepare for the obligatory comparisons to The White Stripes. While yes, Jack and Meg White earned their places in rock royalty many times over, there are plenty of other male-female rock duos out there doing something completely unique and original. Case in point: Little Hurricane, the blues-rock duo from San Diego, CA. The band, featuring Anthony "Tone" Catalano on guitar/vocals and Celeste "CC" Spina on drums, is another solid band in the long line of minimal garage rockers, but they stand out from the pack by incorporating hints of modern rock and pop into their swampy, bluesy sound.

We had the honor of having Tone and CC over at Baeble HQ for a quick Q+A and an exclusive unplugged performance of "OTL," the standout track off their new album Same Sun Same Moon. The pair took a break from their usual drum kit/overdrive setup and instead used an acoustic guitar and melodica for a more laid-back take on the intimate track about finding love that means something. It was lovely having the pair in the office, and we're super excited to finally share their session with the world. Check out the video right here, and if you want even more of Little Hurricane, you can catch them on tour at these dates:

played this random beer festival in Indianapolis.
And I don't know if the crowd was just really drunk... - They were really drunk.
But they ended our set chanting "You are awesome" like you do at a baseball game.
Like "You are awesome.
" And it sounds really silly that that would be our best day, because we played in big festivals and had some great times.
- But we've had many bad days where we were like, "Remember that time they were saying like 'You are awesome'?" - Yeah.
So we'll tell each other, when it's like a hard day, "You are awesome.
" I'll be your thief in the night so I can steal you. I'll be your church where you
pray so I can heal you.
- I'm C C.
- My name's Tone.
We're Little Hurricane.
- Well, Little Hurricane, the name for us is like trying to describe what it is, you know.
I think the music style, genre, whatever, we were going for in the beginning was dirty blues.
We've varied from that since.
We try to push the envelope with what we can do with two people.
How do you describe it? - I think we're kind of like continually unexpected.
We don't like to put ourselves in a genre box.
So we can write kind of sappy low songs and then really aggressive sort of punk rock feeling songs, and have that all on the same record.
- I don't know if there's such a thing as a perfect partnership.
You know we met in 2010.
I had never played in a regular band before.
And I'd been a cook for many years and I played drums as a kid, and I posted an ad on Craigslist looking for a guitar player who was also a songwriter.
- Well, I was looking for drummers and they all wanted to sound like another drummer, and that was my problem.
So when I came across C.
C.
's Craigslist ad, I know she had this fresh energy on music, and drums in particular.
So... - And Tone was not only a guitar player, he was a song writer but a really experienced audio engineer.
So he kind of made up for my lack of experience and gave me some of the confidence that I needed to get on stage.
A live show's very different than our acoustic... - Much louder.
- ...incantations. Much louder, high energy.
I'm the drummer so I hit the drums pretty hard and try and not be told I play like a girl.
- You're not a professional melodical player.
- I am most certainly not.
- That would be easy to carry around now, more than drums.
- Way better than the drums.
Yeah.
My mind's made up.
Took me long enough. You're my one true love. Yeah.
I never thought I could love someone so much.
When I'm with you I feel love.
I wanna know that real love. What we have it's
enough, enough for us.
When I'm with you I feel love. I wanna know that real
love.
What we have it's enough, enough for us.
I told myself, 'Boy, someone must be looking out for you.' Yeah.
Wanted love, but I found you, something surreal, so true. Never thought the girl
for me, three blocks down the same street. Heard her playing that sick
beat.
Wouldn't believe if you told me.
Yeah. My mind's made up. Took me
long enough.
You're my one true love.
I never thought I could love someone
so much.
When I'm with you I feel love.
I wanna know that real love.
What we have it's enough, enough for us. When I'm with you I feel love.
I wanna know that real love.
What we have it's enough, enough for us.
Been waiting my whole life for this moment to feel right.
Look at how far we've come, yeah.
How deep we run.
I've been all around the world with you.
Same sun, same moon, yeah.
By your side is the best view. My mind's made up.
Took me long enough.
You're my one true love. I never thought I could love
someone so much.
When I'm with you I feel love.
I wanna know that real love. What we have it's
enough, enough for us.
When I'm with you I feel love. I wanna know that real
love.
What we have it's enough, enough for us.
When I'm with you I feel love.
I wanna know that real love. What we have it's
enough, enough for us.
Took me long enough.
You're my one true love.
I never thought I could love someone so much.
- Yeah, the song we played today is called OTL and it's the last song we wrote for the album.
It was kind of just a demo that we put on there.
One mic on the drums.
Made it sound like a drum machine so it's definitely not like... - It's not a drum machine though, YouTubers.
- It's not a drum machine, it's really C.
C.
And it's a song where C.
C.
and I, we met as musicians and formed the band seven years ago.
And since then we've fallen in love.
And the song is kind of about that.
Our new record is called Same Sun, Same Moon.
We're naked on it.
- Yeah? - Oh, my goodness.
Not totally naked.
- Kind of.
- It's kind of weird being on tour and playing shows before the record's been released, you know.
People don't really have that chance to listen to it or stream it.
We try and like get the crowd amped up and be like, "This is the first time anyone's ever heard this song.
So for better or worse you guys are going to hear it.
" - We have to blend in the new songs with the old ones.
You know, I hope people take away the true mix of songs that we put on here.
And it's kind of a journey the way it flows front to back.
So if you're listening to one song, you might be like, "What? This is not a dirty blues band or whatever.
" If you listen to the whole thing through, maybe that's my take away from it.
I wanna know that real love.
What we have it's enough.
- Hey, I'm Tone and this is C.
C.
We're from Little Hurricane.
- And you're watching Baeble Music.
