Show Review

English singer-songwriter Izzy Bizu has made waves and a reputation for herself around the globe, supporting acts such as Coldplay, Sam Smith and Foxes, but you're playing yourself if you only think of her as an opener for big name shows. Bizu's songwriting and particularly bombastic vocal range are enough to sell out shows on their own, and she has the skills and presence to rival any artist you can think of.

And today, you can hear her skills on full display when we premiere our Baeble NEXT session with her. We were so fortunate to have Bizu stop by the Baeble studios, but what's particularly amazing is that Bizu's incredible skills are rivaled only by her wonderful sense of humility and personality.

I hate it so much.
I'm so bad at that because it's never... like, I can't.
I can't pull that off.
Why are you guys called Baeble? - I like it.
- The Tower of Babylon, right? - Oh, okay.
Yeah.
Of course.
- The genesis of all languages.
But still, a beat's a beat.
- I caught this Babylon vibe so I was just seeing.
Okay.
Cool.
Hey.
It's Izzy Bizu and big shout-out to Baeble.
Welcome to our sessions.
Take me to the promised land
Unleash me, why am I standing here?
Yeah, I really do believe that
There's more than just this universe, than you and me
Back up in the corner She telling me, telling me
Don't you cross the border She stopping me, blocking me
You're a diamond in the rough I can't fight the feeling
You're a diamond I can't touch I can't stop the dreaming
You're a diamond in the rough ooh, ooh
You're a diamond in the rough ooh, ooh
Prince among thieves Are you a needle in a haystack?
Please follow me No, I won't ever dare go back
Got me begging on the phone But I'm done with all that
Prince among thieves Are you a needle in a haystack?
Back up in the corner She telling me, telling me
Don't you cross the border She stopping me, blocking me
You're a diamond in the rough I can't fight the feeling
You're a diamond I can't touch I can't stop the dreaming
You're a diamond in the rough ooh, ooh
You're a diamond in the rough ooh, ooh
And the type that never rust ooh, ooh You're more than just gold dust, yeah
You're a diamond in the rough I can't fight the feeling

- It's a really nice mic, but you can have it.
- Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Like, a quick one? - Like, a quick little, like, "This is who I am.
This is what I've been doing.
" - Okay.
Cool.
Boarding school... there's a piano in the room.
The headmaster was really good.
He played with me, made me sing in assembly.
I left boarding school, went to theater school, crazy people there, lovely, so I learnt how to perform and tap dance or something, and then...which is super fun. And then after that, college.
I got signed in a girl band, got dropped, and then carried on with college.
And then did open mics and that's where I got discovered, and me and my guitarist from college wrote a bunch of songs together.
And yeah.
- Here we are.
- Yeah.
That's the short version.
You're the man I go You're the man I row to
Savior reign me in
Don't mind my mad behavior
- Okay.
Hi, again.
This next one I'm going to do is "Fly With Your Eyes Closed.
" Here it goes.
Hoping for the best Wishing for the worst
I can tell she's better than me
She's a porcelain doll, so perfect For you, my untouchable dream
'Cause maybe I'm just a girl There's only blood in my world
So fly with your eyes closed
Jump like it's concrete, yeah
Fly with your eyes closed
Darling, it's just a dream
No, no stability No, no stability
Darling, it's you or me
No, no, ooh
Franklin and Marshall coat Skinny jeans with holes
I-I knew he was for me, ay ay
He hardly took me out Tequila shots were downed
I don't care about material, no And maybe I'm just a girl
There's only blood in my world So fly with your eyes closed
Jump like it's concrete Yeah, ooh, ooh
Fly with your eyes closed
Darling, it's just a dream
No, no stability No, no stability
Darling, it's you or me No, no, ooh
Lady in white Am I a dreamer?
Oh, tell me why Where my fortune, dear?
Give me a shot Of what you've got, yeah
Maybe it's time that we fly
So fly with your eyes closed Jump like it's concrete, yeah
Fly with your eyes closed
Darling, it's just a dream
No, no stability No, no stability
Darling, it's you or me No, no, ooh
Aah, ooh, aah, why, ba-da, ba-day Ooh, ooh, ooh, aah, ooh, aah
Woo, yeah, yeah, yeah
Ooh, ooh, ooh, aah, ooh, aah, why, ba-da, ba-day
Ooh, ooh, ooh, aah, ooh, aah, why
Fly with your eyes closed
Jump like it's concrete, yeah
Fly with your eyes closed
Darling, it's you or me
Thank you.
SoundGirl was a, I guess, R&B pop band.
- You toured with the teenage Bieber, though, right? Or... - Yeah, we did.
That was so weird.
Like, I can't believe that happened.
I actually can't believe that happened.
That's so funny.
SoundGirl seems like years ago.
- I'm sure it does.
- It was years ago.
Like, I think almost a decade, I feel super old.
Being dropped sort of made me work harder because I didn't have any other one, like, any other girl to rely on, so I had to be the front woman.
So then I was just like, "Okay.
If I'm going to do this, I've got to get better.
" You have someone that loves you
Whoever said it was easy Must have had it pretty good
I was a fan of their music first.
So, like, I remember being on the tour bus and my friend was like, "Oh, my God.
Listen to this.
" And then he played it and I was like, "This is amazing.
" And then I remember, like, tweeting them and being like, "Can I jam with you?" And then it was so easy.
They were like, "Yeah.
" And I was like, "I can't believe it.
I can't believe it.
" I was like, "Oh, this is so cool.
" So I went to their house, and then we wrote a song, and it was just simple as that.
- And you recently toured with Coldplay.
- Yeah.
Yeah.
Do you know what's funny? Like, before Coldplay, we had a full band.
We had horns.
We had Bbs.
We had everything.
And then, when we did Coldplay, it was completely stripped back.
Backstage, the vibe was just really, like, chill and everyone was in harmony, just, like, skating around on wheels everywhere.
And it was just, like, really nice, and... I actually ended up really liking the direction it ended up going into.
It, like, opened up new ideas.
Dynamically, we were more, like, in tune with what was going on with the songs.
He makes me happy
But I wonder if I do
I throw a fit and it tears him in two
There's glass on the kitchen floor
My neighbor's banging on my front door Oh, why
What makes you happy?
My naked soul, my naked soul What makes you happy?
The mask that I stole, mask that I stole Go ahead and paint the town
I'll just be here smoking down
Go dance with the girl that you deserve
I'm too low for self worth
When you get back I'm just going to hit the curb
Oh, why What makes you happy?
My naked soul, my naked soul What makes you happy?
The mask that I stole, mask that I stole
Am I the one you love to come home to?
You're just a boy, I don't blame you If you walk away, but don't
Just name it What makes you happy?
My tortured soul
What makes you happy?
My naked soul
What made you happy?
My naked soul, ooh, ooh
What makes you happy, happy, happy, happy?
My tortured soul
What, ooh, ooh woo, ooh, ooh, why, ooh
My tortured soul
What made you happy?
The mask that I stole
Thank you.
"What Makes You Happy," that song is about, like, just loving somebody so much that you're scared you're going to lose them or something.
And you're just trying, like, way too hard to, like, make sure that you are right for them, even though you already were in the first place.
But because you're not satisfied with yourself, you're always trying to make yourself right for them.
And you're just having this argument subconsciously, like, all the time to the point where you're driving that person away and you're making it seem as if it's, like, their fault, you know? And it was crazy that I went through that.
I feel crazy singing that now, you know? I sing it now and I'm like, Jesus, like... But in that moment, that's how I felt and that's what that song's about.
Just a cry for help
New music, I'm working on new music at the moment. I kind of... I was saying to the guy I work with, Daniel, last night, we were sitting on the sofa and I was like, "You know what? I just really want to travel and sort of meet different people.
Take myself out of being in the front all the time, and just be on my own and write a bit, and just zoom out for a second and then come out again.
" - Cool.
- Yeah.
What's my name?
If I was to slam doors, am I worth the chase?
I know I don't mean half of what I say
I need your reassurance more than ever today
I'll save my truths for a rainy day
