Show Review

Close your eyes and think of the best holiday gift a person could ever receive. The gift that would keep on giving, something that would grant endless happiness and joy... Now tell us, what do you see? It's Hanson, right?

Hanson gave us the ultimate holiday present this year when they stopped by the Baeble studio to perform new songs off of their brand new album, Finally It's Christmas. And let me tell you, this really is the gift that keeps on giving, as we will be watching this session every December for the rest of eternity.

There's no group that does Christmas quite like the three brothers from Tulsa, Oklahoma, Zac, Taylor, and Isaac. As they played the title track off of the album in addition to "Til New Years Night" and "Merry Christmas Baby," the jolly, upbeat energy in the room was simply undeniable. Taylor sung his heart out and satisfyingly played glissando after glissando. Isaac strummed away on his guitar and Zac killed it on the cajon as they all came together to supply some wicked-good harmonies. Hanson already manages to put listeners in good moods all year round, so when they bring out the Christmas tunes, the amount of tangible glee is almost overwhelming. There's nothing that will get you in the spirit more than setting up some lights and trees and having the Hanson brothers over for a very special, sparkly, and magical holiday session, and you can experience that right now.

three gets, like, the most psyched about the holidays? I think it's more our personalities, we get excited about different things, you know, just like the same way you're into, you know, music in different ways.
Zac is the most into the gifts, I think, because he's usually got a list that he's, like, buying for someone else that's... maybe he gets to play with, too.
all my shopping in one day because I had already planned everything out.
- Like, I was just, like, "Boom, boom, boom, boom.
" - Isaac is a little bit more, like, you know, into the emotional side of it.
You know, the... - Yeah, writing the Santa Claus notes.
- Quality time.
- And what are you into? - Pies? - Yeah, I like the cooking.
I like the food.
I like the being able to have an excuse to... - So consumerism, sentimentality, getting fat.
- Yeah.
right there.
That's the holidays.
- That's American Christmas for you.

It's been said many ways Feliz Navidad and Happy Holidays
Don't matter if you're 9 or 98 Everyone's waiting for the chance to say
Finally it's Christmas, yeah Do do do, Do do do, Do do do
Around this time of year, you can't deny there's something in the air
If you're in London or in Santa Fe, you'll hope for snow to fall on
Christmas day
Finally it's Christmas
Don't delay Santa's on his way
So get your stockings up In time for Christmas day
Don't dismay Throw your cares away
It's gonna be okay Finally it's Christmas
Finally it's Christmas Feels like we've been waiting all year
Finally it's Christmas Can't you feel the Christmas time cheer
Oh
Do do, do do do, do do do, do do do
All of the plans are made So tell your urgent caller it can wait
Just sit back and listen for the reindeer on the rooftop
Flying North Pole to Tulsa on a non-stop
I hear the church bells ring The chorus welcoming the newborn king
Good will and love is what the savior brings
Now the world comes together and sings, yeah
Yeah
Finally it's Christmas Feels like we've been waiting all year
Finally it's Christmas Can't you feel the Christmas time cheer
Finally it's Christmas, yeah
Don't delay Santa's on his way
So get your stockings up In time for Christmas day
Don't dismay Throw your cares away
It's gonna be okay Finally it's Christmas day
Oh, yeah
Shake your Christmas bells, now You know finally it's Christmas
Feels like we've been waiting all year Oh, you know finally it's Christmas
Finally it's Christmas Can't you feel the Christmas time cheer
You know finally it's Christmas (Shake your bells like you mean it)
Let's celebrate
Finally it's Christmas, yeah
- Well, I mean, we spent this whole year promoting the fact that we're celebrating 25 years of being together.
And it's one of these strange things where you're always going forward but every once in awhile, you hit these milestones and it's important to recognize them.
So this whole year, we've been touring around celebrating that anniversary.
Finally it's Christmas, yeah
- Sort of to finish the year, we felt like this was the time to return with a followup to our first Christmas record.
We made a Christmas record 20 years ago.
And we thought, "Well, you know what? After all that we've done, you know, let's put a little cherry on top and release, you know, release something else, something new around Christmas.
" And so a year ago, we actually made the record and put it in the can, saying "Hey, this is when it's going to come out.
" And now, finally, it's Christmas.
The album is out.
- Finally.
- Finally out and we're playing a few Christmas shows.
We're sharing it with fans, and we're finishing this year on a high note.
Do do do, do do do, do do do, do do do Do do do, do do do, do do do, do do do
- The great pitfall of making a Christmas album is that artists sometimes, it's like they join the Christmas genre.
Like, they forget that they're a band or that they're a musician and they simply just try and... - Like, make Christmas music.
It really is a record that feels like it's...maybe the best example would be, like, it's what you put on at the Christmas party.
Right? It's not what you, you know, leave on the kitchen when you're making, you know, pie.
It's like the party's on.
And so most of the record is pretty uptempo, even the songs that are midtempos, like "Blue Christmas.
" Like, the way we arranged it, by the end of the song, the whole band is just rocking.
Yeah
You know, baby Say woah-oh-oh
Merry Christmas baby Merry Christmas baby
Sure did treat me nice, yeah
Merry Christmas baby You sure did treat me nice, yeah
You treat me so nice
All those pretty presents I feel like I'm in paradise
Well, I've got music on my radio
Oh yeah
Feel my vibe, y'all I've got music on my radio
Yeah
Feel like I'm gonna kiss you underneath the mistletoe, yeah
Oh yeah
Santa come down the chimney half past three
All those pretty presents for my baby and for me, oh
Merry Christmas, baby Sure did treat me nice
Do do, do do do do, yeah
All those pretty presents I feel like I'm in paradise
Come on, now Merry Christmas, baby
Merry Christmas, baby Hey, you sure did treat me nice
Do, do, do do do do, yeah
Merry Christmas, baby Sure did treat me nice
Do, do, do, do do do do, yeah
All those pretty presents I feel like I'm in paradise
Whoa Merry Christmas, baby
Merry Christmas, baby I feel like I'm in paradise
I'm in my paradise Whoa whoa oh, oh, oh, oh
Merry Christmas, baby Happy New Year
Merry Christmas, baby
Merry Christmas, baby Merry Christmas, baby
Whoa oh, oh, oh Whoa oh, oh
Merry Christmas, baby Happy New Year, yeah, yeah
Yeah
All those pretty presents I feel like I'm in paradise
- Hanson Christmas shows are... they're magical, basically.
I mean, there's constant fairy dust that are, like, floating out over the audience.
- I'm going to say, like, combine fantastic and magical.
Magtastical.
Blue Christmas
- Everybody has their own feelings about what Christmas is to them, and so it's interesting to kind of see what the dynamic is.
Like, do people jump? Will they clap? Will they yell, like, at a Christmas show? Like, when people are like... I can't do that on Jingle Bells, you know? - I would say this, I would say it's still pretty ruckus but there's just sort of, like, a warmth.
Everybody's a little bit more like, "Aw, shucks.
It's Christmas.
" - There has developed, especially over the last, you know, decade or more, a real sense of community at Hanson shows, at least we feel that.
I think a lot of that is that, you know, people have spent, you know, 20 years with us.
But there's also a connection between people to each other.
And so the idea of what's already kind of at the heart of our fan community I think really connects and easily translates into a Christmas culture.
Because, you know, it's the time where you're sort of given a free pass to go a little bit into the, you know, cheesier, into the, like, you know, Hey, free hugs people.
" Like, it's...everything's brought down. People's self-consciousness drops a little bit, and so it makes for a fun show.
Here's a song for the new record.
This is about the party from Christmas until New Year's night up at the North Pole.
- Yeah.
- Yeah, yeah.
- Oh, sorry.
- Yeah, I was invited.
So...and I wrote a song about it. Like to hear it? Here it goes.
Here we go.
One, two, one, two three, four.
I got my invitation December 25
Split a taxi with an Eskimo to North Pole Drive
Told the driver I don't wanna be late
Can you go a little faster Drop me off at the gate
I need a toddy for my body 'Cause, baby, it's cold outside
I knocked on the door, Hello, Mrs. Claus.
Ruby red lips like the Wizard of Oz
Two wooden soldiers, They're checking the list
And everybody's dancing to the Peppermint Twist
Gonna do it right, This ain't no silent night
Oh, well once we get Santa on his sleigh, on his sleigh
We'll play rock and roll from Christmas 'til New Years Day
One week a year we do it right, do it right
We play rock and roll from Christmas 'til New Years Night
Rock and roll, yeah Rock and roll
Somebody please spike the eggnog bowl
'Cause we need some lubrication for this rock and roll
Been dancing so hard, I stepped on an elf
So many Christmas goodies, I can't help myself
Singing "Ho, ho, ho!" under the mistletoe
Now once we get Santa on his sleigh, on his sleigh
We'll play rock and roll from Christmas 'til New Years Day
One week a year we do it right, do it right
We play rock and roll from Christmas 'til New Years Night
Rock and roll, yeah I said rock and roll
We'll play rock and roll from Christmas 'til New Years Night, yeah
Come on
All right, here we go. Come on now.
Oh, Rudoph's playing reindeer games Nick is shouting out their names
Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen
Santa's coming down the chimney Everybody, sing it with me
Once we get Santa on his sleigh, on his sleigh
We'll play rock and roll from Christmas 'til New Years Day
One week a year we do it right, do it right
We'll play rock and roll from Christmas 'til New Years Night
Rock and roll, rock and roll Rock and roll, yeah, rock and roll
We'll play rock and roll from Christmas 'til New Years Night
- Our fans have gone from that core fan being, you know, 15, to being, you know, 20 years later, right? And, you know, you're 35 and you've got a job and you've got a kid and you've got all this stuff, and the fact that people still will show up hours before shows and wait in lines and... - Camp on the streets.
- And still stay, you know, hours after the show to wait for the bus to roll so that they can catch us as we're leaving the venue.
And, you know, that's really cool.
And it's amazing to see it mean that much to people, that they want to stay and say hi or say thank you or say whatever it is, you know, tell you a story about a song.
Because they don't have to do that and they've got a lot of responsibilities.
They've got, you know, they've got to get up that next morning and go to work but they're still like, "Hey, it's Tuesday, and I'm celebrating until, you know, until the cows go home.
" - Hey, we're Hanson and we just want to wish you a Happy Holidays.
- Happy Holidays.
- Merry Christmas.
- Yup, hope it's a good one.
- Happy New Year.
- Oh, yeah.
Baeble Music says that, too.
What? What else? Oh, they also say that they want a cake for Christmas.

Artist Bio

Hanson is an American pop-rock band from Tulsa, Oklahoma formed by brothers Isaac (guitar, piano, vocals), Taylor (keyboards, piano, guitar, drums, vocals), and Zac Hanson (drums, piano, guitar, vocals). They are best known for the 1997 hit song "MMMBop" from their major label debut album Middle of Nowhere, which earned three Grammy nominations. Despite the enormous commercial success of Middle of Nowhere, the band suffered from the merger that eliminated their label, Mercury Records. The group was moved to Island Def Jam Music Group, which they eventually left after conflict with the label about creative input. Hanson has sold over 16 million records worldwide and have had eight top 40 singles in the UK and six top 40 singles in the US. The band now records under its own label, 3CG Records.
