Show Review

When Robert Delong stepped into our studio, it was immediately clear that he wasnt interested in showing us anything that wed seen before. He brought with him mountains of equipment, which littered every surface of our office, and used them to set up a scene that was, just like his song, Revolutionary.

He roams from his complicated audio mixers to the electric guitar, looking equally at home behind both. Drum pads bridge the gap, and Delong pounds on them faster than a racing heartbeat, triumphantly dropping his drumstick after he nails each verse. Oh, and hes also belting out his lyrics the entire time. Hes doing _so much_ on stage, but hes not alone. Hes helped by his talented bassist, drummer, and thanks to the wonders of technology, K.Flay. During her collaboration with Delong, Favorite Color is Blue, she stares out at us from a flat screen, singing in between neon and psychedelic patterns.

Its so obviously appropriate that his newest EP (out today go check it out!) is called See You in The Future. Because Delong isnt interested in anything that isnt pushing forward. Youre either in the future or youre falling behind. So try and keep up!

I'm Robert DeLong and I'm an electronic music performer.
And I'm from Seattle, Washington, but I've lived in Los Angeles, California for the last 12 years.
Locked up, naked with socks I'm watching the phone ring
It's making me angry It's making me mad.
Maxed out minimum wage My brain is a time bomb
I'm saying goodbye Mom I'll see you again
Striking a pose Smiling in photos
Without any reason With people that I'll never know
I'm out of control living a fictional prose
I took an oath, it's killing me though
'Cause I don't believe in the things that I do
And now my favorite color is blue
And now my favorite color is blue
And now my favorite Roped up, rot in a cage
I'm having a breakdown
Drinking at a playground, tequila for one
Too short walk in the streets, I'm hating my haircut
You say that you're here but You live on the sun
Burning a kite I'm at a funeral
nothing unusual Baby, I do what I like
Looking to fight, smoking a blunt and a pipe
Taking a bite, worm in the apple I knew it would have it
'Cause, honey, the vermin survive
Swerve to the side, been driving all night
I'm thinking of changing my name, thinking of wrecking a home
'Cause loving and hating are one and the same
And I'm feeling like everyone's feeling alone
I'm just looking for something to soften the blow
A second inside of the truth
I don't see red 'cause Now my favorite color is blue
And now my favorite color is blue
And now my favorite color is blue
And now my favorite color is blue
And now my favorite color is blue
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.

All right.
That's great.
We're done.
Music started… I mean, I remember writing my first song when I was three years old.
It was a bit derivative.
But other than that, my dad... My dad was a drummer, so around 10 years old is when I started, like, actually kind of getting into music.
And yeah, it just kind of… everything spiraled after that.
I was a computer nerd and so getting into production kind of made sense.
It was kind of crossing over those two worlds for me.
And I click And I like
Measure up Scrutinize
Counterfeit, extraordinary, lives I'm a sick prototype
I'm a sign of the times Fake it like I made it for their eyes
I'm paralyzed Let's not keeping wasting away
Behind our hi-res displays Let's be revolutionary
Yeah, we could be so much more
Let's be more than ordinary.
What are we waiting for? Let's be revolutionary.
New history can't ignore Let's be more than temporary
What are we waiting for?
Stuck in a loop.
See the posts. Read the news.
Addicted to the story, not the truth.
Every click adds into All the ad revenue
Pay to reinforce my narrow views.
Without the proof.
Searching for someone to blame
Behind our hi-res displays.
Let's be revolutionary Yeah, we could be so much more
Let's be more than ordinary.
What are we waiting for? Let's be revolutionary.
New history can't ignore.
Let's be more than temporary.
All this fear All this war
We could give it all away While we're here
We want more Than just standing in line
No more cash No more gods
Just give 'em all away Just give 'em all away
Let's be revolutionary, We could be so much more
Let's be more than ordinary
What are we waiting for? Let's be revolutionary.
New history can't ignore, Let's be more than temporary.
What are we waiting for?
What are we waiting for?
So I went into this writing session.
This guy Ricky Reed.
And we're sitting in the session together and I was like, "You know, I never write love songs.
It's just not my thing.
I won't do it.
" And then he's like, "All right.
Then let's write a love song, to like, force you to do it.
" And then we did it and it was fun.
Of course, the twist is like it's like a love song in the Armageddon, you know? It's like after the world has ended, we'll still be around together.
And in a way, because of that, it kind of works on two levels of being like a love song about maybe somebody specific, but then on another level, it's like kind of about our love as humanity in general that it's like since the beginning of humanity being its own cognizant thing to the end of time, I think that love is maybe the thread or the current that kind of defines us or something like that, which is a nice, very deep, nice answer.
Or it's a bunch of bullshit.
Whatever.
In the beginning, there's a heat wave, It's us from nothing.
I caught a red eye, out to Bed Stuy, to get your lovin'
'Cause we got no secrets to tell You know me like I know myself
Well, it's all right All of my time in the world
I want you to be my one girl.
It's all right, it's all right
If you were the first person on Earth
We would be together when it ends.
Started when we had no names or words.
Finishing each other's sentences.
Nobody understands me, Nobody like you do
So if I'm the last one standing, I would want to watch it burn with you
Because you're timeless, you see me clearly
All of the violence turns to silence When you are near me
'Cause we got no secrets to tell You know me like I know myself
Well it's all right All of my time in the world
I want you to be my one girl
It's all right, it's all right.
If you were the first person on Earth
We would be together when it ends
Started when we had no names or words.
Finishing each other's sentences
Nobody understands me, Nobody like you do
If I'm the last one standing, I would want to watch it burn with you
See it born anew
'Cause we got no secrets to tell You know me like I know myself
Well, it's all right All of my time in the world
I want you to be my one girl It's all right, it's all right
If you were the first person on Earth, we would be together when it ends
It started when we had no names or words Finishing each other's sentences
Nobody understands me Nobody like you do
So if I'm the last one standing I would want to watch it burn with you
I would want to watch it burn with you I would want to watch it burn with you
My first record was written 100% by myself over the course of, I mean, the first 27 years of my life.
You know what I mean? My sophomore record was written while I was on the road for the most part.
I was touring from about 2013 to about 2015, '16.
I mean, I was on the road 250 days a year, just constantly, which was great.
I loved it.
So a very different sort of process, you know? I was just like when I could, I would write tunes or I would be working on stuff in the van or something like that.
This record has been a lot more, like I've had a lot of free time to try things and experiment with sounds and go in different directions.
And because of that, I think it's been cool because I've written some stuff...And this first EP that's going to come out is kind of more reflective of this, is like some stuff that's a lot more…it's trying to distill what I do into something that's a lot more pop in some ways, but then also like very hi-fi and in your face, you know? I like to call it like future hyper pop or something like that.
And then, yeah, but then on the other side, I've been writing tons of stuff that's just like way left field for me, that's almost like…that sounds like it could be, I don't know, like psych rock or something like that.
And a lot of the stuff is going to come out eventually and I feel like it's been fun to kind of explore all those different worlds and it's been good for my own personal, like, just headspace too.
Twist your tiny lies into the truth Spinning a web with your fantasies
Turn your doubtful eyes back onto you You're pushing me out with your jealousy
Jealousy Jealousy
You're pushing me out
Jealousy
You're pushing me out with your jealousy
In the corner, I saw you with that fateful face
Heard you preaching the gospel that you helped to shape
Wedging it all together, making the pieces fit
But I'll buy every piece of it
Selling your speculation, minting your counterfeit
You got me, I must admit
Twist your tiny lies into the truth Spinning a web with your fantasies
Turn your doubtful eyes back onto you
You're pushing me out with your jealousy
Jealousy, Jealousy, Jealousy
You're pushing me out with your jealousy
In the future, I'll see you coming from afar
You'll get closer and I'll forget just what you are
You're wedging it all together, make the pieces fit
And I'll buy every piece of it
Sell your speculation, mint your counterfeit
You got me, I must admit
Twist your tiny lies into the truth, Spinning a web with your fantasies
Turn your doubtful eyes back onto you, You're pushing me out with your jealousy
Jealousy, Jealousy.
You're pushing me out with your jealousy
I've had enough of what you've been telling me
You're pushing me out You're pushing me out
You're pushing me out with your jealousy
Twist your tiny lies into the truth Spinning a web with your fantasies
Turn your doubtful eyes back onto you You're pushing me out
Twist your tiny lies into the truth Spinning a web with your fantasies
Turn your doubtful eyes back onto you You're pushing me out with your jealousy
