Show Review

The amazing Clean Bandit and Anne-Marie recently teamed up for their hit single, "Rockabye," a song about a child in need of love, with a beat that will make you want to dance and lyrics that will make you want to cry. An extraordinary collaboration such as this called for an extra special session. We headed out to Atlantic Records in New York to pair these two incredible artists together for possibly one of the rarest sessions we've done yet.

British trio Clean Bandit has those songs that everyone has heard before. You can't go anywhere without hearing them - in fact, their song "Rather Be" (featuring Jess Glynne, who we also interviewed) is the most Shazammed song of all time. And you know what? We're not surprised, because it really is one of those inescapable songs that subconsciously crawls into your mind and stays there forever. "Rockabye" seemed like a continuation of that, and so when we asked two thirds of the group, Jack Patterson and Luke Patterson, about the secret behind making hits, they responded modestly, "some sweet chords and a universal message." For a group that creates such monstrous hits, they sure are humble.

After Clean Bandit, we spoke with singer Anne-Marie. She only has a few singles out, but she's another artist whose music you've heard everywhere. "Alarm" and "Ciao Adios" are both songs about the same man who cheated on her and made her realize her self-worth. In the end, she comes up strong because she's an independent boss lady who doesn't need to rely on a man...Which is fact, because she is one of Spotify's biggest breakout artists. "Alarm" is platinum-certified, and she was the most nominated artist at The BRITS, with nothing but an EP to her name. "That feels pretty good now that you're saying it...I feel pretty good about that," the singer said with an uncontrollable smirk on her face, genuinely looking like she hadn't realized it until we verbalized it. The Britpop singer has a few more solo singles coming out before the release of her debut album later this year.

"That version was a bit different from the original which is always nice...It never gets boring for me - singing it - because it's such a meaningful message. I love singing it...Luckily. Or else that'd be pretty rubbish," Anne-Marie joked about their performance of "Rockabye." "We hadn't actually performed the song as a whole with Anne-Marie until way after we finished the music video, so it's really nice to come full circle in a relaxed studio environment with her in this way," Clean Bandit said of the collaboration. So sit back, relax, and get ready to experience the moment when Clean Bandit and Anne-Marie first performed "Rockabye" together in this unique session.

the managing editor at Baeble.
When I'm not writing about music, I'm making my own music in New York City.
Baeble covers a lot of great artists.
I love to take the opportunity to pique their brains about gear, songwriting and more.
So, join me as we talk artist to artist right here on The Writer's Block.
On this episode of the Writer's Block, I head to Atlantic Records in Manhattan.
I'm going in the studio with Brit hit makers, Clean Bandit and Anne-Marie to talk about their exciting collaboration.
And during our discussion, Clean Bandit shares their secret for topping the charts.
So you guys just keep pumping out like hit after hit.
What's your secret? - Yeah, some sweet coeds and a universal message, that's the kind of... - That's the formula - That's the crux of it, yeah.
- Well, I guess that answers all my questions.
And on that note, watch them team up on a live performance of Rockabye.
She works the nights, by the water She's gone astray, so far away
from my father's daughter She just wants a life for her baby
All on her own, no one will come, she's got to save him
She tells him, "Ooh, love, no one's ever gonna hurt you, love.
I'm gonna give you all of my love.
Nobody matters like you."
She tells him, "Your life ain't gon' be nothing like my life.
You're gonna grow and have a good life.
I'm gonna do what I've got to do"
So, rockabye baby, rockabye I'm gonna rock you
Rockabye baby, don't you cry Somebody's got you
Rockabye baby, rockabye I'm gonna rock you
Rockabye baby, don't you cry Rockabye, no, ooh, rockabye
She found her love, way too early He left her there, with more than tears
and hurt to carry They said too young, what are you
thinking? They told the truth, she chose to use her
heart and keep him
Now she got a six-year-old Trying to keep him warm
Trying to keep out the cold When he looks in her eyes
He don't know he is safe
When she says "Oh, love, no one's ever gonna hurt you, love I'm gonna give you all of my love Nobody matters like you.
" So, rockabye baby, rockabye I'm gonna rock you
Rockabye baby, don't you cry Rockabye, no, oh, rockabye
Yeah, yeah rockabye no, oh
Now she got a six-year-old Trying to keep him warm
Trying to keep out the cold When he looks in her eyes
He don't know he is safe when she says
She tells him, "Oh, love No one's ever gonna hurt you, love
I'm gonna give you all of my love Nobody matters like you.
" So, rockabye baby, rockabye I'm gonna rock you
Rockabye baby, don't you cry Somebody's got you
Rockabye baby, rockabye I'm gonna rock you
Rockabye baby, don't you cry Rockabye, no, oh oh, rockabye
Yeah, yeah rockabye No, oh oh, rockabye
Yeah, yeah, rockabye
- So this is really a unique session for us to have you and Clean Bandit kind of play together.
You guys recorded Rockabye together.
How did it feel to perform it with them? version was a bit different to the original, which is always nice too and as well, change it up a bit.
But yeah, I love that song.
It never gets boring for me singing it because such a meaningful message.
So I just love feeling it and singing it so luckily, - Keep singing it.
- I wouldn't know where to go next.
- All the time the way we work and the way we make music is quite fragmented.
And we'll start a song, you know on the road, on the laptop and just kind of build it up and then, different people will get involved and say for example, we hadn't actually performed the song as a whole with Anne-Marie until like way after we've actually finished the music video and everything.
So, it's just really nice to come around full circle and just in a kind of relaxed studio environment and actually perform it with her in this way.
It just felt really, really chilled.
- How do you feel about the reaction that Rockabye has been getting so far? - It's amazing because like, for ages, we had all that kind of music and then Rather Be kind of like stuck out like a spike.
- In terms of success.
- Yeah, or just in terms of people who knew us for... - Yeah, for that song.
- Like there's a sync we got in the UK for a supermarket chain called Marks & Spencer.
They used the instrumentals for that, and they've been doing it for a long time now.
And they did like a Christmas version of it.
- And it's like the soundtrack, it's all like, all these food being prepared, it's like a slow motion.
- It's like food porn.
So they're like slicing up carrot really slow.
- And sexually.
- Yeah.
- For the viewers.
- Yeah.
- That's insane.
And your music is being played to that.
- Yeah, and then like I saw a thing on the Wikipedia page from my school and it had like the alumni from our school.
And it's like, Jack Patterson who made the music for Marks & Spencers.
- Rather Be was the most shazamed song of all time.
- Wow.
- Did you know that? - No.
- Yeah.
- Whatever.
- Yeah.
- All right.
- Well, that's cool.
- So like, how does it feel to have a song that's kind of just everywhere? Because I feel like everyone in the entire world has heard that song.
- That's amazing.
I love Shazam.
- Yeah, it's cool that the song can do that like, I think a lot of the time when people put on music, it's usually like their fame carries a particular song.
But for this... - It's completely the opposite, right? - It's the exact opposite.
- No one knows who we are at all.
- Yeah.
Ooh, yeah yeah
We're a thousand miles from comfort We have traveled land and sea
But as long as you are with me There's no place I'd rather be
I would wait forever, exalted in the scene
As long as you are with me, my heart continues to beat
With every step we take, Kyoto to The Bay, strolling so casually
We're different and the same, get you another name
Switch up the batteries
If you gave me a chance I would take it It's a shot in the dark but I'll make it
Know with all of your heart, you can't shake me
When I am with you, there's no place I'd rather be
N-n-n-no, no, no, no place I'd rather be N-n-n-no, no, no, no place I'd rather be
N-n-n-no, no, no, no place I'd rather be, ooh
We set out on a mission to find our inner peace
Make it everlasting so nothing's incomplete
It's easy being with you, it's sacred simplicity
As long as I am with you, there's no place I'd rather be
With every step we take, Kyoto to The Bay, strolling so casually
We're different and the same, get you another name
Switch up the batteries, oh oh
If you gave me a chance I would take it It's a shot in the dark but I'll make it
Know with all of your heart, you can't shake me
When I am with you, there's no place I'd rather be
N-n-n-no, no, no, no place I'd rather be N-n-n-no, no, no, no place I'd rather be
N-n-n-no, no, no, no place I'd rather be When I am with you, there's no place I'd
rather be
Beeeeee, hooooooooo oh Be, be, be, be, be, be, be, be, be
Yeah-e-yeah-e-yeah-e-yeah-e-yeah, yeah, yeah
If you gave me a chance I would take it It's a shot in the dark but I'll make it
Know with all of your heart, you can't shake me
When I am with you, there's no place I'd rather be
N-n-n-no, no, no, no place I'd rather be N-n-n-no, no, no, no place I'd rather be
N-n-n-no, no, no, no place I'd rather be When I am with you, there's no place I'd
rather be
- So you are one of Spotify's biggest break out artists.
Your song, Alarm, is platinum certified and you are the most nominated artist at the Brits this year.
And you don't have a debut album out.
- No.
- How does that feel? - Yeah, it feels really good actually now that you're saying it.
You don't actually go into it until someone says out loud that they pretty good about that.
- And so, what's coming up for you next as a solo artist? Are we going to get that debut? - Yeah.
My album is out this year.
I don't know what date yet.
We haven't set a date.
I'm going to put out a couple more singles before it so...because I've worked with other people so much.
That might be how people know me like they probably know me through collaborating with Rudimental or for Rockabye.
I just need to put out some more music just for me to like, show people who I am.
It's all good.
I've got loads of festivals and shows.
I'm supporting Ed Sheeran on tour.
So, yeah, busy year.
- Are you excited about that? Like how do you feel about... - No, of course I am.
Yeah, it's so cool because me and Ed, we have known each other for a long time now.
And we've always loved working with each other and hanging around with each other.
So, when this came up, I was completely happy.
I think it's going to be a lot of fun and yeah, no sleep basically.
No sleep for the next year.
Can you tell us about the other song you played, Ciao Adios? - Yeah, that's my single that's out at the moment.
So, Alarm, obviously, that was my last single, and it was about me finding out that the boy has been cheating on me.
And I was kind of like, shall I give you another chance? And then about two months later, I realized that I'd never want to ever have anything to do with him ever again.
I wrote Ciao Adios.
So that's what's it about.
- Yeah, I wanted to ask, so both of those singles are about the same dude? - Yeah.
- Wow.
- Yeah, thanks to him.
Not thanks to him because he was horrible but thanks because I have been able to write a couple of songs out of it.
- I feel like you really, that really makes you come across as a really strong person with a lot of perseverance.
But like, do you think that's important to you, like to women listening to you all around the world? - Yeah, that is one of my biggest reasons for doing music is so I can speak to women and girls, and also boys and men.
But like when I was growing up, I had Christina Aguilera's album, was a massive part of my life and growing up as a teenager, and I just feel like I want to have that type of music for young girls and that now... So yeah, I definitely want to come across as strong and kind of let people know that everything is going to be all right, yeah.
- Awesome.
That's great.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, uh
Ask you once, ask you twice now There's lipstick on your collar
You say she's just a friend now Then why don't we call her
So you wanna go home with someone To do all the things you used to do
to me, I swear, I know you do
You used to take me out, in your fancy car
And make out in the rain
And when I ring you up Don't know where you are
'Til I hear her say your name
Used to sing along, when you played guitar, That's a distant memory
Hope she treats you better than you treated me, ha
I'm onto you, yeah you I'm not your number one
I saw you, with her Kissing and having fun
If you're giving her all of your money and time
I'm not gonna sit here wasting mine on you, yeah, you
Ciao adios, I'm done Ciao adios, I'm done
Ciao adios, I'm done
After three, after four times Why did I bother?
Tell me how many more times Does it take to get smarter?
Don't need to deny the hurt and the lies And all of the things you did to me
I swear, I know you did
And now you take her out, in your fancy car,
And you make out in the rain
And when I ring you up Don't know where you are
But I know differently
And now she sings along, when you play guitar
Making brand new memories
Hope you treat her better than you treated me, ha
I'm onto you, yeah you I'm not your number one
I saw you, with her Kissing and having fun
If you're giving her all your money and time
I'm not gonna sit here wasting mine on you, yeah, you
Ciao adios, I'm done Ciao adios, I'm done yeah yeah yeah yeah
If you're giving her all your money and time
I'm not gonna sit here wasting mine on you, yeah, you
Ciao adios, I'm done
And now you take her out, in your fancy car
And you make out in the rain And when I ring you up
She know where you are But I know differently
And now she sings along, when you play guitar Making brand new memories
Hope you treat her better than you treated me
I'm onto you, yeah you I'm not your number one
With her Kissing and having fun
If you're giving her all your money and time
I'm not gonna sit here wasting mine on you, yeah, you
Ciao adios, I, I'm done Ciao adios, I, I'm done
You get on with your life and I'll get on with mine
If you're giving her all your money and time
I'm not gonna sit here wasting mine on you, yeah, you
Ciao adios, I'm done
Rockabye, don't bother cry.
Lift up your head, lift it up to the sky, yo
Rockabye, don't bother cry Angels surround you, just dry your eye
